  • Students Sues School Over Gay T-Shirt

    http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20...ophobe-t-shirt

A student at an Ohio school wore a shirt to school that says "Jesus is not a Homophobe." It had the Christian fish symbol on it, too.

The school allegedly said the shirt was "indecent and sexual in nature."

I agree with the school. It was sexual in nature but maybe not indecent.

No, it really isn't. At least, not unless you want to claim that being gay is about nothing but sex... or, at least, to apply the same standard to every indicator that someone is straight (or just has nothing against those who are.)

Wait, what? How is it sexual in nature? It's saying that Jesus didn't hate people who were gay. I.e., Jesus loved everyone. How is that offensive? Isn't that what the bible says? To love everyone as Jesus did?

Yeah, if thats all the shirt said, then the district could get slammed.

I could see it being sexual in nature...sort of...just like the terms "Married", "spouse", "straight", and "SEXUAL REPRODUCTION" which we learned in science class are also sexual.

That's abuse of the spirit of the legislation.

Again, I wish I could say I'm surprised, but ever since the PS pulled crap like using laptops to spy and trying to ban lunches from home, this is nothing new.

It just sounds like they're catering to the most oversensitive PC people who want to shelter their kids from everything. Ironic, considering schools are supposed to be places teaching kids stuff. You can't shelter them forever.

Love how I'm being bashed. *I* can see it being taken as sexual, someone at the school thought the same. How are our views automatically wrong when they are just our opinions?

When your (generic and specific) views as a tiny minority are being used as an excuse to punish someone for something that they should not be punished for.

Maybe some people believe schools should be a place for learning, not a place for protest.

If they ban inflammatory shirts in the dress code, that's one thing (and appropriate in some cases). However, banning this shirt because it's 'sexual' is just...strange.

Public schools are for learning, but they're also where people start to show their individuality (especially high school). Sure, some clothing breaks the dress code for obvious reasons (short shorts, short skirts, skinny tops, etc.), but usually shirts that lean toward the political aren't an issue. If it isn't cursing and doesn't have an obscene image or any sexual words (like cock, for example), then I don't see how it's the school's business.

If a school wants students to stop wearing political or opinion-based shirts, they need to have a uniform.

Id say high school is a place for both. It just depends on how its being done.

Spray painting the building would be wrong. Wearing a T-shirt with no sexually explicit words, comments, or phrases is okay.

More than likely, someone was afraid a religious group would be offended and cause a stink and thats a possible reason the school acted as they did.

They would totally get bonus points if they pulled him out of American History class during a discussion of the Bill of Rights.

Perhaps it would go differently if, instead of complaining that others aren't taking your side, you provided reasons we should agree.
