  • Overused Words & Overused Expressions

Is it just me or are the words creep, pervert, etc. waaaaay overused and usually used to label people who are not creeps or perverts? I can understand calling a genuine creep a creep; but, lately it seems as if people are way too sensitive and notices every little thing.

Also, usually when a story about someone being a jerk or being abusive, you usually see people nod their heads sagely and say things "if I was there I'd do yadda yadda yadda"

Unpopular opinions I'm sure, I just wanted to get everyone elses take on it and see if it was just me that noticed this trend lately.

    Nope - just you

Personally - I haven't noticed 'creep' overused - though pervert does get thrown around a stack. It seems to apply to anyone who shows a particular interest, perhaps 'too much' interest in someone or something that someone else doesn't. It's just another, more pathetic version, of "I don't agree with you".
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

ITA, I can understand it being applied to someone who doesn't take the hint; but, not someone who genuinely expresses interest in someone initially.

      Thanks for the reply.

I've noticed that sometimes it seems girls are a bit oversensitve when it comes to unwanted attention from males. It seems like "creep" and "pervert" are thrown around whenever an unattractive and/or older guy shows interest in them.

I used to overreact to unwanted attention when I was a teenager. Now that I'm older, I've learned when to ignore a guy, when to shoot them down nicely but firmly, and when to say "Get the fuck away from me, you pervert!".

There are a lot of subtle differences between a genuine creep, and a misguided guy. I believe it takes time and experience to learn the differences. I think most of the girls who throw around phrases like that are usually younger, and err on the side of caution when judging the situation - as they should. If a girl has trouble reading the intentions of a guy who is trying to flirt, it's safer to write them off as a creep and avoid the situation. Yes, the guy might have been ok, and his feelings may get hurt, but that's a risk anyone takes when flirting.

Also, usually when a story about someone being a jerk or being abusive, you usually see people nod their heads sagely and say things "if I was there I'd do yadda yadda yadda"
I never post what I'd do in a situation unless the poster asks for advice, or it seems they could use the information in the future. However, when reading stories like that, I do automatically put myself in the situation as if I were the poster, and think about how I would have handled it (or how I would have liked to handle it). I think a lot of us do that. I'm just not one of those people that replies with every thing I think about.

When I post "I would have done..." I really would have done that. Especially in the case of a personal space issue, cuz that's a big thing with me.

As far as "pervert" goes; I sometimes jokingly call my boyf or male mates that, just as they call me a "bitch". We're just kidding around, but I can see how people would take that the wrong way.

To my mind, the difference between a misguided guy and a pervert is bodily contact. The misguided guy might say something dirty, but it's the pervert who tries to put his hands on your breasts, or pull at your top. To me, that's the difference and one that would earn the pervert a sucker punch.

One word and one phrase that annoy the living shit out of me:

              - Green. It is a fucking color. Not the next greatest fad of appearing to be environmentally friendly. This whole "green friendly" bullshit is getting annoying. Yes, it is good to conserve and recycle, but, there is a point of being annoying. Can the world go one day without being bombarded with "green this" or "green that"? I'm tired of the signs, the commercials, the programs, the TV NETWORK, etc.

              - "Gas Guzzling" preceding almost anything other than a hybrid car. I enjoy driving my pickup. Also, did you know that my truck can run on E85? No? Then shut up. Why should people be pointed at for having a vehicle they had before gas prices went up? "Gas guzzling" has become almost an insult. Why can't the people on TV (news, commercials, etc) just say "SUV" instead of "Gas guzzler SUV"?

People will use the word "creep" to describe someone that creeps them out. So I guess in that sense it's appropriately used.

The problem is that some people get creeped out far too easily. There are a few people I know, both on the forums and in real life, that seriously need to get a grip on reality.

Because they want to play on people's emotions. People are already pissed about having to pay $4.00+ per gallon, so calling them "gas guzzlers" gives more impact to whatever they're talking about. Sure, many SUVs get worse mileage than some cars...but plenty of cars (Ferraris, Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, etc.) have per-gallon economy in single digits

Somewhat along those lines...I find it amusing to read European magazines, which describe vehicles like the original VW Beetle as "thirsty" because it doesn't get over 40 miles per gallon

Ironicly a word I feel is overused is "uber"
I hate it it drives me up the wall-the German translation for the word is "over" so yes it word itself may sound cool-it is not a modifier, to anyone that knows German it sounds stupid(my brain auto translates and I usually get the WTF? face going because the writer/speaker has caused the meaning of their sentence to be lost)-replace the word "uber" with the correct translation to see what I mean-

"Hey Joey got a new car, it's uber-cool"
"Hey Joey got a new car, it's over-cool."

see my annoyance-over is not a modifier to another word-gah!

I personally do use "creep" and "pervert" a lot. And I admit it. So start throwing your rocks my way.

99.99999999% of the time, I am not in the mood to be oogled or catcalled or stared at.

While a woman should never be told she "should expect attention" in certain clothes, it doesn't matter what I wear and it happens. It irritates me.

It all boils down to manners and common decency, something a lot of males of every age group seem to not have. (I say males because I don't get hit on by females, I'm sure they can be just as bad at times, but I've never experienced it).

I'm leaving work and in jeans and a tshirt, my hair is a mess, I look like Hell, my blood is probably still boiling from being angry for 8 hours straight at work, and all I want to do is get some gas and cigarettes and go home. But no, they can't just leave the poor little girl alone, they HAVE to make comments or weird grunts or whistle at me.

I have seen guys so shameless, I have been out and about with my boyfriend and guys we pass are acting like panting dogs. And no, I am not being conceited. It happens to a lot of my friends as well. I can't believe the way some men think they can behave and that it's ok to make someone uncomfortable like that.

It's one thing to take a look at a cute girl, maybe a double take, and enjoy the sight of a beautiful person. It's another thing to keep leering at a girl obviously with her boyfriend, or a girl who looks like she's about to either pass out or have a heart attack and obviously is not in any mood to be treated like a rumproast.

Yes, men who blatantly stare at a girl who is with someone else is a creep. There is no reason to keep staring and making faces and oogling. Yes, men who find any situation to hit on a girl appropriate no matter what the circumstances are creeps. Watching a guy undress you with his eyes, especially when you're tired and cranky or depressed or down, is enough to make you want to hop in the shower and scrub your skin off and wash your eyes with Drano.

Honest question Blas...So you have never stared at a really hot guy who was with someone else?

Also, thanks everyone for the replies..there are a lot of words that are overused (i.e green, gas guzzler, etc.) that I have never thought of being overused.

I'm a red blooded female. Of course I notice good looking men. As soon as I see a guy interacting with a girl in a manner that suggests they may be together, I don't anymore. I also have a stealth way of looking at men where I'm secretive, not licking my lips, rubbing my crotch, whistling and grunting.

Sheesh Blas... you call yourself 'red blooded' - but don't lick lips, rub crotch, whistle and grunt??? Yeah - right!!

I presume the drano was for their eyes, not yours???

As for overused expressions, I hate hearing "Go away you weirdo and never ever talk to me again, or I'll call the cops!!!" Geez - overused or what???

No?? Ok... I might get a bit more serious now...

Umm - there are a couple, but they don't come to mind right now, but pretty much anything that is considered 'hip' (not that the word 'hip' is actually hip any more... I'm suprised that cool is still cool!)

How about 'random'?? How does 'random' equate to good???
