  • Review system suspended - reviewees didn't like being reviewed

Last spring, the Dallas Police Department set up a review panel to review dashboard video. Seemed like a good idea at the time, checking the high-profile incidents to ensure that good behaviour was encouraged, while bad behaviour was corrected.

Well, it seems that the cops didn't like being watched all the time, because it made breaking the law a bit difficult.

“It was sending a bad message to your typical patrol officer,” said George Aranda, president of the Latino Peace Officers Association. “Everybody was so afraid of going over the speed limit.”

Funny, the cops seem to think it's OK for them to watch us. Some of them even say, "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about!" Well, that works both ways.

Aww... You mean they'd been forced to stop abusing their status as cops?

        Such a shame.

While I agree with most of the comments, there has to be a line drawn - like giving discipline because you were LESS than 5 mph over the speed limit??? I could see if it was 5 or more, but >5 seems anal to me. The same goes with giving somebody a ticket for going >5mph over a speed limit.

Delta, while i see the point you're trying to make, strictly speaking >5 is greater than 5 you mean <5.

but I agree with you, with one small difference. There's a 10% tolerance generally, since that's how far out speedometers can get due to the tire wearing down.

It's not just speed limits, I can't tell you exactly how many times I've seen a cop flash his lights just because he didn't want to get stuck at a red light but it's a lot. That and they don't seem too fond of stop signs either, but they do like flipping a u-ie that no one else can because of their lights, I'm not saying that all cops are like this but from what I've seen their driving needs to be reviewed. If I did what some of the cops I saw did I'd get some serious tickets and maybe a defensive driving course, just because I wasn't driving a patrol car and didn't have flashing lights.

I just want to say I have nothing against good cops, it's just the assholes I have a problem with.

I've seen them do that, and it annoys the hell out of me. I they're not after someone and not responding to an emergency, they can wait for the green like everyone else.

I actually saw one do something even worse than that. I saw one driving the wrong way up a one way street. I was there because it was the street I was living on at the time. I had just parked my car, when I saw him coming. If I would have arrived a few seconds later, it could have been bad.

My favorite is when I see a cop driving along with one hand holding his cell phone plastered to his ear. Bonus points when he has a partner in the passenger seat who could be dealing with whatever needs to be dealt with on the phone.

I spotted an ambulance doing just that. If they had their lights on the WHOLE way down the road, then it wouldn't be an issue. But they decided instead to stick their lights on at the roundabout.

There was a story down here years ago about someone who got fined for leaning his arm out the window. It was actually a passenger, not a driver and on top of that, they then showed a cop doing it.

Not all that long ago, I saw a private-provider ambulance do this several times in a few minutes at the same intersection. They turned on their lights just long enough to get thru the intersection each time. If they were really dealing with a patient I could understand it -- but then, they would have had the lights on constantly if that were so, if not necessarily the siren. From what I can tell, they were grabbing lunch for themselves and the office crew.

I've seen the police do that, and don't have a problem with it. Not the "several times for lunch" part. But when I've seen them do it was when there was no traffic anyway, at an intersection that even though they were the only car there would take about five minutes to cycle around. (I've sat at the same turn many times.) Never have I seen them do it when anyone other than themselves would be affected.

Around here, in what seems like a far more populous area, I see it fairly regularly in ways that cause other cars to have to wait until their past. They use it as a "I don't feel like waiting so I'm going to abuse the power of my position and equipment" manner.

you reminded me of what i saw on another message board i go to.

guy was driving down the road, not paying attention to his speed. he was just automatically matching the car in front of him... who happened to be a cop.

the cop pulled to the side to let him pass and then tagged him for speeding.

cop: Do you know how fast you were going?
Him: Not really. I was just following you.
Cop: *cat butt face... but she let him go*

and personally... i remember one day while driving in va beach. i saw a cop going the other direction and he had his directional light on to make a left hand turn.

being a nice person i started to slow down to let him go. then he turned his lights on to FORCE me to ... do what I was doing anyway.

always felt he was a bit of a jerk for that. I mean wtf dude i was slowing down to let you go first anyway

That's different, of course. (The light I watched it at is actually very busy... in the daytime. But it was in front of work and I was doing the overnight shift; very little traffic in the mall area at 4 AM.)
