  • judge strikes back at stupid names for kids

    Story here

The girl in question never told anyone her name due to her embarrassment over it, so during the custody battle the judge presiding made her a ward of the court to change her name. What was her previous name you ask? Talula Does The Hula. Are we in the movie idiocracy already?

If that isn't bad enough here are a few names that were blocked(what are these people thinking):Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit.

But there is a child named Violence, and one named Number 16 Bus Shelter.-

    Sheesh

These people should just never be allowed to breed. Why the hell do they think it'd be cool to name a kid something like that? They need some serious help.

I heard about this on the radio. Why should it take a court order to make parents not embarass the ever-living-hell out of their kids is beyond me.

I do believe we had a rant about weird names at one time...

"Detroit" would actually be kind of a cool middle name. I thought that was the name of one of our union reps at the grocery store (his name wad D. Troy).

Also, look at the number of months that are names: January, April, May, June, August, December.

But, a lot of these stupid names need to cease.

to be fair August was a popular name for a while due to Augustus Caesar the guy the month was named after so the name is not a month, the month was named after him.

those month names, the state name...kind of different- not embarrassing, though.

I mean... Tulalula does the Hula??? WTF?

            Sex Fruit???

Um...Yea. Those parents were on some hard drugs.

I have a friend of mine who named her son Dakota (she calls him Cody for short). We both worked at the same childcare place, and there was an adorable little boy named Cody (short for Dakota).

My daughter's middle name came from the Sherlock Holmes Cannon. We named her after Irene Adler (the only woman to outwit Sherlock Holmes). Granted, I'm huge Sherlock Holmes fan, but I'm not going to name a son of mine either Mycroft or Sherringford. (Kudos to those who know which 2 characters have those names in the Sherlock Holmes stories).

I might be weird, but I really do fail to see the problem with weird names. Okay, the kid gets picked on and, if they hate it that much, they can change it when they're old enough. Got it. But I don't see why being named "Floor Lamp" or something would be any worse than "Jessica" or "Anthony". I really don't.

Then again, I've ensured that I will never spawn, so I might not be the best judge of this.

you were obviously never bullied to the brink of suicide in school, I was, as were quite a few members of CS and Fratching, and yes the bullying can be that bad. Kids are mean, part of the reason for columbine was bullying, after years of abuse they just "snapped", I was close to that point several times. A child with a name that creates an easy target for bullies makes it easier for the bullies. I had the misfortune of having the initials "BJ" and a last name similar to a breed of cow, I had to put up with 12 years of bullying and getting "picked on", coming home crying every day I went to school(I started faking illnesses, by age 8 to avoid going), before I reached the age where I could change my name(I actually never did) would you willing have anyone tortured for 12 years for something they had no control over? Being able to legally change your name at 18 is no solace to a child who by age 10 is being assaulted daily simply because of their name.

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii, Violence?!! WTF. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these parents giving their kids these wacky ass names?! It's sad when the government has to step in for something like this because the parents have more air than brains in their heads. I really feel bad for those kids.

See, I like the name Dakota as well.

I wish my wife and I would have thought about some different spellings of Caitlyn when naming our daughter. My dad wrote it down one day as Katelynn. I would have changed it to Kate Lynn, then her middle name. But, Caitlyn is perfect as well.

So should it be illegal for anyone to give their child names that can be abbreviated as BJ?

Obviously not, but parents should stop and think about the impact the name they give their child will have on their child's life.
I was supposed to only have one name, but then my father decided to give me another.
E.g. I was meant to be called Jane, but then my Dad called me Lindi Jane.
My parents then used Jane, instead of Lindi, which made the first few weeks of every school year hell, as teachers would call out "Lindi? Lindi Surname?" and I wouldn't respond as I didn't regard it as my name.

TTO had a girl in his school called Thessa Tickels. Yes. Tess Tickels. (And this has been independently confirmed by other people that went to his school). If they had THOUGHT about the name before giving it to her, she wouldn't have been teased the way she was.

That's some pretty heavy and very offensive assumption there. I actually attempted, three times, before I got to high school because of being bullied. But it wasn't about my name. It was about other things, and kids will always find something to pick on a weak or sad or different individual with.

I just don't understand why the world places so much importance on names like that. I think it's way over-board, but if the rest of the world cares so much, fine, whatever. Let them have at it.

That web site with all the bad baby names is hilarious. seriously, what the hell?

I like the post from the parents who want to name their kid A.S.S. and wonder if he'll get made fun of! (anthony something smith)
