Er, I think you may have to be in the job to experience the downsides.

Guy I know at work used to ferry prostitutes around on a graveyard shift as a taxi driver. He said the girls were all clean regarding drugs and were doing it as a business plan. Several 'retired' owning their own houses outright by the age of thirty. He said they all universally hated their clients. Each and every one they had.

Tell you what, Greenday. I'd like more empirical evidence. Want to go off and rent yourself out for sex and report back about how much you enjoyed it and how much you made?

It's still illegal in New Jersey and I'd like to keep a clean record.

Lets count some of the downsides. Getting paid to...

Risk exposure to a number of diseases, all socially shameful, and several potentially lethal

Risk potential bodily harm or even death from some clients

Having to remain on constant guard for those who'd want to add you to their "Stable", and would love to hook you on some nice, intensely addictive drugs to keep you in line (At least, where it's less than legal)

Not to mention, having to deal with customer entitlement (I paid you a hundred bucks, I want you to swallow ya slut!) and having to deal with, shall we say, less than hygienic customers?

And thats not dealing with social stigma should it become know what your job is, any issues one might have with an SO, or even finding an SO, family, friends, etc, etc, etc.

Yep. Sunshine and roses all around, being a prostitute.

Bear in mind, I do think it should be legalized. Victimless crime and all that. Should be legalized and regulated.

Well, you've pointed out a few other reasons why I don't do it. But you also ended with a reason why I would potentially do it. If it was regulated and you would have to worry about STDs or what have you, it would be a much better option.

Well, sure, except you only get paid to have sex if it's with people who have to pay if they want anyone to have sex with them.

Oh, definitely. Regulation would help curb and potentially end a lot of the worst aspects of prostitution.

Even then, though, dealing with less than pleasant customers....less than completely hygienic....and, wow, the entitlement from some people.

Hell, over on CS we've seen how far people go over the relatively minor crap of coupons, or a thousand other idiotic customer entitlement issues. Imagine the fits they'd throw over sex. *shudder*

A guy I know reports that the rooms in certain buildings he occasionally frequents have shower cubicles and it's required for both parties to indulge before fun time.

Makes sense. Better working conditions and all that.

That's only a problem because of the intense social stigma about it.

If it were fully legal and regulated, then the less-hygenic and overly-entitled would be less of an issue, as well, as the right to refuse service doesn't exclude reasons of hygiene and unless you're working as a sub, there's no reason to put up with abuse in any job.

Somewhat less, maybe, but how would removing the stigma attached to prostitution mean that people who can't get sex any other way wouldn't be more likely to hire a hooker than those who can easily get it free?

When the social stigma is removed, a different equation resolves itself - do you want to wine and dine a woman for a chance of having sex with her, or just pay a prostitute, and be assured not only that you'll have sex, but that you won't have any additional entanglements once the liaison is over? The answer depends on whether you're interested in more than just bumping uglies.

Additionally, there's plenty of evidence that there aren't really very many people out there who can't get sex any other way.

A few years ago I was videoed retelling an annecdote about captain dickhead and his time as an escort driver (including the bit where I was puzzled as to why he was emphisising the brand of car) or the hooker taxi as I some times refered to it as.

He's not ugly ugly, but I always said he was the type that would get charged more for sex.
Although he did say that he paid 10-20 I forget a few years ago in soho, but the way he said it gave the impression you had a few minutes and there was a queue right behind you watching you and everyone else who had been infront of you doing the same woman.

Knowing the woman (or man) you are with for that brief time has had many other partners that night is one thing, seeing the twenty guys infront of you serviced is another.

Me I just dont seem to go out anymore to meet up with potential friends let alone love interests, so I could use that route to circumvent the whole dating malarky.
But having said that I've been celebate for over 10 years now and porn fills that need, I'm not a big people person these days, so I don't care that porn lacks certain interactions.

                            edit:
video here (not my youtube account)
Yes I do spend most of the year looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards and I am aware that women might not be interested in me whilst looking like I sleep in a field.
