But isn't the whole point of "stand your ground" that if you think your life is in danger, you don't have to make any attempt to escape?

It's interesting to note that the man, while only being 3 inches taller than she, had over 100 lbs on her; the guy either works out a lot or is extremely fat, and my money is on the former.
She had not been living in the house for two months prior to the incident and had arrived there, parked in the garage, and spent the night. Apparently, he and the boys weren't home, as they arrived the next morning, entering through the garage.
She went to the garage to get her car out. As for the garage door not working, it's possible that she wasn't working it properly due to panic, or the battery was getting low (which I have had cause devices to work intermittently); another possibility is that he 'locked' the automatic door when he got in that morning, which would render a remote non-functional. She went back into the house to leave; if the house is built like most I've seen with a door into the house, that door will lead into the kitchen, which is where he and the two boys were. Whether she fired at him or not would have to be determined by the angle of the shot. If she were firing at his head, the bullet would be traveling at a fairly low angle; if she fired over his head with no intention of striking him, then it would have a much steeper angle, probably close to or more than 45 degrees.
If this relationship has a pattern of abuse from him against her, it's possible her lack of calling 911 is a result of either her being conditioned not to (she calls the police, he beats her harder - his only arrests for battery appear to have been after the victim needed hospital care despite the fact that he freely admits that he "puts his hands on" every woman he has a relationship with).

There are any number of reasons the door might not have worked for her, but later worked for the police. And if her kid(s) were in the house, that's a pretty powerful reason not to just take the nearest door out, but instead to do *something* that might let you take them with you.
Still, though, it's a lot less clear-cut with more information. The bigger problem, to me, is the mandatory sentencing in the first place. Idiotic system."My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."

No big surprise with mandatory sentencing. Judges are supposed to use judgment; that's why the words are so similar. So why do we pass laws barring them from doing that?"My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."
