  • Gay Marriage a "risk to children"

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-05-1...r-kids/4008452

    http://consciencevote.wordpress.com/...or-the-family/

To sum up, basically a group of doctors (including the psychiatrist) are arguing that gay marriage generally causes more health problems in gay people AND in their children. Among one of the claims is that syphilis is/was a gay man's disease.

The third link has the letter in question.

How is it a gay man's disease if so many straight people/women have gotten it?

C-Span is my favorite. Franken makes some of it worthwhile.

never though he was that funny, hated the "stewart" character, but he's a damn good politician, we need more like him(personally I'd love to see the man in the white house.)

He's not funny as a radio host.

He's pretty damn funny as a Senator.

What's sad is that I'm in Australia. Generally, our nutjobs are less nutjobby.

It's sad that these idiots are allowed a voice.

I'm a bit curious... OK, for the sake of argument, let's pretend that AIDS and syphilis are gay diseases. Furthermore, let's pretend they're caused *by gay sex per se* rather than only by sex with someone already infected; that way we don't have to worry about whether the married couple is faithful or not. I understand that having an ill or dying parent is stressful for a child, but that doesn't seem to be where this angle of attack is going. It seems to be implying that the kids will themselves be at risk of catching these STDs. Which, even granting the rest, is total nonsense...

UNLESS you believe, or at least want your audience to get the idea, that the gay parents are molesting their children.

Now there's an accusation that, whether direct or implied, never gets old.

Franken : Isn't it true, Mr. Minnery, that a married same sex couple that has had or adopted kids would fall under the definition of a nuclear family in the study that you cite?

Minnery : I would think that the study, when it cites nuclear families, would mean a family headed by a husband and wife.

                  Franken : It doesn't.

... My God, man, when somebody calls on you to defend your argument, and then completely destroys your defense with just TWO FREAKIN' WORDS ...

Trust me, it was not a good argument.

BlaqueKatt, thank you for linking that video. I loved it.

To be honest, I was cautiously optimistic when I saw the video, because I wasn't quite sure if Franken was right or not. But I felt much better after reading this report from Politico, stating :

"Senator Franken is right," the lead author of the study told POLITICO. The survey did not exclude same-sex couples, said Debra L. Blackwell, Ph.D., nor did it exclude them from the "nuclear family" category provided their family met the study’s definition.
"Well, the good news is that no matter who wins, you all lose."

I don't think gay marriage is a risk to children. What's a risk to children is shitty parenting, as in lack of attention, affection, substance abuse in the home, verbal and/or physical abuse in any way shape or form (regardless if it's the spouse/partner or even children getting abused) from ANY parent.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people...

Scientifically anal tissue is more absorbent and less protected thus it is easier to contract a disease anally. That being said gay men are not the only ones that have Anal sex.

If you want to discriminate against people that have anal sex that's fine.

When you screen a plasma/blood donor don't ask if they are a gay man that's had gay sex ask the individual if they have ever had anal sex since that is where the concern stems from.

In fact that straight woman that had anal sex with 20 people before settling down into her 2nd marriage is a higher risk for STDs than that gay couple that met in high school and have only ever had sex with eachother.

oh don't worry, this group doesn't represent the majority of doctors, or the blood banks.

Iin fact, the blood bank has a deferral period for if you've had anal intercourse-something like 12 months from the last time you have sex, which I can sort of understand, due to things like HIV/AIDS not appearing until around six months after "infection". That applies to both males and females.

Generally most of the other blood bank related stuff is various illnesses and if you've ever used drugs. (seriously, if you only once did heroin, you can't donate. ever.)

The plasma center I went to would bar you for having homosexual intercourse just once in the last 20 years even though symptoms for an STD would have long since shown up. But they never ever ask women about their sexual history beyond, Have you had sex with a gay man.

The company running it was very discriminatory. This amused me to no end because a member of their medical staff is gay.

He attended Harvard College and graduated with an A.B. cum laude in 1973 in political science, his son and daughter went to Princeton and Harvard respectively, his wife also went to Harvard-but sadly he's known more for his mediocre comedy.

Federal law in the US is that you cannot donate blood if you're a man who has had *any* form of sex with another man even once since 1977. Which is stupid, and based in nothing but the notion that gay people are icky. But as long as enough people who are eligible to donate do so, there's no incentive to re-examine the rules. And, of course, at the time that rule was put in place, it almost made sense.
