I'm opposed to the death penalty, but I sure as hell am not going to lose one minute of sleep over this diseased filth.

I'd like to think my reasons are practical. Cruel and unusual punishment? Bo-ho, cry me a river. I'd love it if only people like this or Paul Bernardo faced the death penalty, but as an institution it doesn't work that way. There's always the risk of someone wrongfully facing the needle. Then what? Can the state give them back their lives?

So lets line the death penalty process with lawyers, appeals, more lawyers, so we absolutely minimize the risk of a wrongful execution. I haven't looked at figures, but smart money says that with those safeguards, the cost of a capital trial and execution ends up exceeding that of life without parole. Money that could be better spent on policing, health care, education, national defense, gets wasted so that we can feel macho.

For the record yes, if someone I knew were raped and murdered I'd be singing a very different tune. I know myself well enough to know if that horror ever came to pass, I'd be pissed enough that my logic and reason would go right out the window.
