  • Female gamers

I was listening to BBC World last night and they aired a story about female gamers. Female gamers are now about 42% of the on-line gaming world these days.

The report mainly focused on the seer harassment (sexual, threats, degrading, etc.) that "little boyz" heap upon female gamers.

The report mentioned a website where there is a collection of totally derogitory messages and such that have been sent to gamers.

NOTE: the site name sounds like a porn site but is most defineately NOT.

    Feel free to comment.

if you go to page 4 or so there are a couple of videos at some game cons that deal with this problem

meh, boys hae picked on girls anytime they set foot into "man territory", be it sports or gaming or other.
likewise, girls mock boys for treading into "girl territory" based on female gender steriotypes.
some people grow out of this. most don't.
it's why i dont add strangers to my friendslists and tend to not play multiplayer games. it's hard to play a game swimming in a sea of stupid.

reading that site, it reminds me of early-highschool idiots trying to be insulting. bet most of them are still boys pretending they are big bad grownups.
love the ones where they are calling the girls names, and friend-requesting them at same time. that's, what, kindergarden "i likes a guuurl" tactics, bully her into liking you.

It's worth noting that it used to be that gaming was the realm of the geek, a personality type notorious for a lack of social skills. Then it started branching out to include a lot of kids, who are immature by nature.

I've been a female gamer since the days of Everquest, have never hidden that I'm female (and never been accused of lying about it, either), and have never had anyone do anything inappropriate based on the fact that I'm female. Hell, the boyfriend has gotten "hit on" in games more often than I have, even when we've been playing as a team of female characters in the same game.

Gaming is a world where it doesn't matter what your gender, race, sexuality, or creed is. You're going to get attacked with the same fervor as anyone else. They'll simply use a different set of words if they know what any of those listed things are. Or they'll make assumptions and still attack.

Yes, but no matter what, the vast majority of the flamers and brats are going to be using a slew of misogynistic and homophobic slurs as the mainstay of their insult arsenal.

The boyfriend has had to shut down some of the teens using teamspeak in the video game room at the cons we attend.

My brother, who is merely an asshole and not actually misogynistic or homophobic does the same, and it's evidence of the fact that being female or gay is seen as being less capable than being a heterosexual male.

Hopefully, when all of those derogatory gamers get their asses kicked in video games by female gamers, they will change their outlook.

I used to play Tekken 3. A lot. Once, when I was playing Tekken 3 at a local arcade, a teenage boy sat down next to me and put in his token. This caused the game to automatically go into "VS" mode, forcing us to battle each other. I didn't initially mind, but right before the battle began I heard the teenager turn to his buddy and say, "Dude, I'm playing against a girl."

            Oh, it was ON, now.

When I beat him 2 to 1, he simply stood up and stomped away.

Sadly, the anonymity afforded by the internet makes online gaming less fun. Thats why I like to play with people I know. Not always possible.

Most times I just ignore those who toss insults about. I really love that feature. I will say this, Ive never seen a female gamer be really stupid about tossing about pointless insults. Its usually the younger gamers, 13-18 males. But once you ignore them they are worse than pathetic. I have to wonder though how long they keep typing insults in general chat afterwords or if they even realize theyve been muted.

Not that the older generations dont have a fair share.

Sounds like how my middle brother used to be. I remember playing against him on Streetfighter 2; he was playing as Ryu and I was playing Vega, as usual. I beat him three times in a row, using the flying suplex and he demanded that I change characters. I switched to Chun Li and beat him again, so he pulled out the plug. XD

Whenever I play a game online, which isn't very often now; the only one I really play properly is zOMG! on Gaia, I often get mistaken for a guy as my avatar is masked. I found before that a lot of people mistook me for a guy on previous occasions when I played online; I used to play Runescape but got tired of it. I had a male character simply cuz I found that female characters got harrassed. I expect it's far worse now in online playing, cuz a lot of teenage boys are extremely immature.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

God I hate that. I'm a woman and a WoW player. I'm an avid raider. Like really avid. Top .01% in the world raider. I know my stuff and I'm not gonna hide it. Every once in awhile, just for shits and grins, I'll throw together a raid for old content, like the raids from the beginning of this expansion. Stuff that's kinda easy now, but still requires some level of coordination so onto Ventrilo we go.

I'll start talking (I'm the raid leader, you're gonna hear my voice) and invariably some idiot will flip out because "ZOMG A GIRL CAN'T RAID!!!!1!" But I have developed a constructive way of dealing with such morons. I'll let them get to the first trash pull, spank them in dps, make them look a fool and kick them from my raid. I'll tell the group in vent that if anyone else has a problem, they should probably leave now if they'd like their pride intact. Oddly enough, no one else leaves.

that's one of the things that was awesome about both crews I hung with when I was playing WoW.

The crew I've been with off and on for various games since before WoW was even released is all over the map, and the casual core crowd is pretty varied. The second crew had some of the most awesome player diversity, with the top-level raiding healer in the guild being a 72-year-old woman.

And wasn't Leeroy Jenkins male? XD Proof right there that it certainly isn't a girl thing to not be able to play the game properly.

My normal raid groups, the ones I do current content with, are awesome and pretty much 50-50 male/female. I'm the oldest by far in my guild group, but I'm the baby of my other group (I'm 33). It's mostly husband and wives with me and one guy being the only two singles. It's adorable when they try to hook us singles up since we live in the same state.

I just got back into EQ (don't laugh) and found out my guild is a lot of married couples. Seriously, sometimes I wish my wife was a gamer (but she despises computer games).

Those who give female gamers a hard time don't realize how great it is to be able to share that with someone.
