What absolute crap. I mean, just what exactly was the cop trying to do? Maybe they should start cracking down on all the criminals that hang out down there instead of innocent people doing nothing.

eh...every telling of this story i've managed to come across on google points back to the new york post as its original source. given that the post has about the same level of credibility as the national enquirer, i'll withhold judgement until i see some independent corroboration.

I could certainly see stopping them from dancing... if it were crowded or if they were doing it close to the tracks, either of which could have been a dangerous situation. But since neither of those (so far as we know so far, at least) is true... well, it's worse than arresting someone for "eating" because they haven't quite swallowed the last bit in their mouth as they step off the escalator.

If this is true, its "illegal" to dance when no one is crowding the platform (them things are big enough for two people to dance by the wall and not be close to the yellow or white line) but people can walk around naked (not that there anything wrong with that)?

The Post is a lot more credible than the Enquirer. The Enquirer is toilet paper use quality. The Post actually posts news.

Don't be silly. Criminals might fight back. Better to harass people not doing anything wrong.

                  Since when are we
                  1) Forced to carry ID everywhere in public in the US
                  2) Not allowed to video in NY state (it's legal to tape police here)

Much as I hate how everyone sues for anything nowadays, I don't blame them for suing in this case. Only way bureaucracies pay attention is if it's in the media and involves a lawsuit.

Well, the Supreme Court just said it's okay for the police to ask people ID to make sure they are in a state legally. It's only a matter of time until states expand that to other crimes besides being an illegal alien.

As for video taping, there's been a lot of controversy in NYC recently about this. Especially with their "Stop and Frisk" laws. And naturally, the cops are pissed because it's creating pressure on them to be more lenient on people than need be.

Yes, they did. They said it's OK for the police to *ask*. They also struck down the part that required people to *carry* said ID.
