  • And the slippery slope argument rears its ugly head...

    http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/senato...-1226476963864

Apparently same-sex marriage will normalise beastiality...

Thank god the remaining Senators can see sense! (mostly...while they may be for/against it, they're at least civil about it)

Oh and this is coming from the same douchebag who wanted to ban the burqa in case someone tried to rob him while wearing one.

The thing I love about the bestiality argument is that it implies the person making it sees no significant differences between a man and, say, a horse. Because, obviously, if there were any differences of significance then they could be used to allow marriage to one but not the other.

(I'm still trying to make sense of the burqa thing. Not sure WHY, though.)

The anti-equality mouthpieces here in the US have made that same argument. It's nothing new and just really shows their ignorance.

The whole comment about the relationship between the animal and the person being 'consensual' thing also got me. Animals **CANNOT** give consent! They can only act on instinct. They cannot make a sentient, fully informed, conscious decision.

Seriously, if these people can't tell the difference between a committed, loving, supportive, nurturing relationship between two people of legal age, sound mind, and rational understanding-...and someone taking advantage of animals or children...then THEY are clearly the ones with the problem, not us.

I found this article helps explain why they use those arguments, well it explains the thought process behind it(and explains why it's a broken process)

That's actually not that much more of a stretch. Polygamy is actually legal in many places, far more places than where homosexual marriage is.

Where I'm quite happy for people of the same gender to have recognised marriages, I am against polygamy - mainly because a marriage is (in my eyes) a union of equals, and you cannot be equal partners if there are more than two.

As for Senator Idiot, he resigned pretty damned quickly.

                  Well, duh.

I think my favourite part about this argument is that it implies there's this huge underground movement of hopeful guys hiding at home watching the news. A sheep lovingly tucked under one arm.

Except that at last count, the number of polygamists in Australia is extremely low. Your point makes sense in terms of why you're against it, but assuming that gay marriage will lead to polygamous marriage is a stretch.

And Cory Bernardi should've resigned back when he made the comments about the burqas. The fact that he stayed on this long....Ugh...

sure you can, you think law firms or other business ventures can only ever have two partners? Marriage is a contract, nothing more. I know a triad, two women, one male-the male and one female work outside the home, the other female is a stay-at home mom, the child has the best of both worlds. Two working parents, and a parent at home, everyone's happy because none of them had to sacrifice what they wanted out of life.

It is possible to have more than two people be equal, but that's not polygamy as generally practiced. Work all the technical bugs out first, and I don't see why allowing the few people who'd want to make a go at a group marriage would be so bad. (And good luck to them; the odds of failure probably go up exponentially with number of partners.)

That article nails the thought process behind these bigots. Everything is black and white, good vs evil, ect. They don't take the time to think about why something is wrong because hey! God said it's wrong so that's enough for them. It's infuriating.
