well to be fair GI Joe/various "boy" marketed war toys are ok because they're killing for patriotism and freedom, Katniss was only killing to survive for the entertainment of others....she should've laid down her life in protest rather than fight back against oppression.

If they actually knew anything about the woman beyond the sanitised version most people get fed, they'd kick up a real stink over that too. Especially if the manufacturer included the syphilis...

Actually funny enough, someone mentioned Brave. Chances are that they will or have released a Merida doll. Nobody's complaining about a strong woman who bucks tradition who has a bow and arrow....

ETA: They actually do have a Merida doll in the states, but I haven't seen them down here.

Yes I know I'm quoting myself. Had a bit of a check down the toy aisles today (was very curious to see the very creepy Furby) and discovered the dolls in question. Nothing wrong about them at all.

The "Brave" sets however, have now come out. We have plenty of Merida dolls and playsets. All marketed to young children. And I haven't heard a peep out of the psychologists.

            Oh har har.

Also the other point I was referring to was that usually Barbie/Bratz/other dolls are being slammed for being "sexy" and not always promoting a realistic positive role model for young girls. They finally make a doll that isn't sexy and promotes determination, strength and guts and suddenly she's slammed. Nobody has a problem with Merida, but then again, it's DISNEY. Anything that's from DISNEY MUST be OK!

Haven't seen "Brave" yet, but, does Merida actually go out and hunt people with her bow? That may be the difference.

Initially she uses it against animals, but towards the end of the film, she's forced to use it against people to stop them hurting her mother.

Given the price point and packaging, it's not really being marketed to kids but to adult collectors. If you ask me, hypocritical is starring in some of the more violent movies out there but when they make an action figure of you, it can't have a gun.

I wound up checking 3 main locations the other day that sell toys (curious about the Furbies). All three of them had the Katniss doll, but all 3 were placed at about my waist level (or chest level for someone who's petite). Not exactly marketed for adults at that height.

It wouldn't be the first time that the manufacturer's intended demographic doesn't mesh with the retailer's targeted demographic.

My first thought on reading this post was "is it pink?" And then I clicked the link.

                          It's a cartoon! Cartoons can't hurt anyone!

According to the original linked article, the retailer was displaying it according to Mattel's instructions:

He defended the decision to stock it alongside children's toys. "This product is not age-restricted and, as such, is ranged with other Barbie products as requested by Mattel. Questions about the product should be directed to Mattel."
                          Mattel, apparently, had no comment.

I'm a dude and I would TOTALLY buy this doll. Especially if it includes her Girl-on-Fire dress and her Mockingjay getup.

Haven't been lucky yet? Well, may the odds be ever in your favor.

I'm not sure if it includes her dress or not. But the mockingjay getup doesn't happen until Catching Fire.
