  • Slammed for Using Food Stamps: Ga. Woman Seeks Apology

Not every person on public assistance is a deadbeat. There are some people out there who geniuely need help because they are have problems.

Though i wouldn't mind if they had fired the manager then he would know what it was like to struggle. Karma can be a bitch.

For some people it's too easy to judge someone just by a single observation, such as whether they're on food stamps, dropped out of college, are a single parent, or became homeless. Many times, though, when you study the whole story behind their ordeal, you realize just how wrong your prejudice was, and how hurtful your condemnation and blame for their plight is.

Whenever I read stories like this, all I wish for from whoever incorrectly or unfairly judged another is that they experience sincere remorse for their actions. I definitely hope the manager learned his lesson and will become a better person as a result.

I wonder tho; if she's embarrassed, then why is she splashing her story all over the internet? O_o

Regarding the topic; I own a designer winter coat. When I bought it, it was the winter sales and it had been knocked down from £200 to £80. I paid £20 and Fiance paid the rest. However, when I go to the council offices wearing it, I do wonder if some of the people there are thinking, "What's that woman here for? She's wearing a posh coat, so why is she claiming benefits? Bitch!"

I actually have a lot of nice boots that I bought in the sale or Fiance bought for me, so I expect I do look too affluent to be receiving benefits sometimes... but I only claim them cuz I need them to live. I'd be happy not to have to. Yes there are benefit cheats and scammers, but believe me, I'm not one of them. The giant TV I have was given to me by a mate of Fiance's when he bought a new one, and I certainly don't go on expensive holidays. My benefits simply help to pay my rent, food and bills.

I know people who used to have good jobs and have the nice clothes that went with that job who are now on state aid. Knowing the circumstance I don't look at her any different for still wearing the nice clothes.

As for why this woman put her story on the Internet I think she was humiliated and then got mad. Very mad. Now she wants it thrown out there so that maybe people will adjust their brain to mouth filters a bit better.

            This.

people react differently over time. I have had it happen to me I was embarrassed by a hurtful comment, and when I sat down and though a bit, I was like"Why am I embarrasssed? I did not do anything wrong" and stopped being embarrassed, but I did get angry at the person.

I can sort of see how it could have slipped out- the employee said $10 of the woman's bill wasn't covered, and she argued the point, apparently to the level that a manager got involved, so she might have been acting like an SC ( we don't know exactly what she said about the items in question) which would have irritated the manager

On the other hand, even if she was throwing a tantrum, the manger should know to keep their mouth shut in front of the customer. I think she's a little off with her demands ( she wants the manager demoted, a personal apology and the manager retrained. Personally, I'd drop the demotion from the list of demands, since it is kind of extreme to demote a manager for one incident.

One article I read said she'd been arguing for 30 minutes over 10 bucks. If that's true, I can understand why employees would be frustrated, though I still think it was an inappropriate comment. And if it was really taking that long, a manager should've been called much much sooner.

On the flip side, it's frustrating to be told a price is different from what you expected, especially if you don't have wiggle room in your budget. If something isn't ringing up correctly, I expect a fix, not an argument.

I have an iPad that I bought with the tax money from my previous job. I use it for my studies mostly. I haven't taken it in to the welfare office just to avoid comments like that.

As for the lady, I suspect that the comments like that lit a bit of a fire under her ass so to speak. She knows full well that she's entitled to food stamps and now that she's been tarred with the same brush as the welfare cheats, she wants to prove that you can be on food stamps and not be a welfare cheat.

I read a followup article that stated the manager got transfered to another store and Korger offered her a $15 gift card.

Did she accept it? I've seen similar articles where people have turned down gift cards "for the principle". Personally, I'd take it.

As would I. It's food money, afterall; if she uses a store gift card nobody would 'know' she's on assistance

Then again, I'm the sort of person who actually accepts apologies.

It was unprofessional and rude of the manager to say those kind of comments to the customer. The manager should've kept those comments to herself.

Manager was a jerk, but her isn't her response kind of disproportionate? I would have just accepted the gift card.

The woman did not accept the gift card, stating that she wouldn't be shopping with them again.

Also, the woman wants an apology from the manager; not just from some random stranger from headquarters.
