Meh. Husband/brother - in some parts of my general area, it could be the same.

This was big new in my town as this happened on the other side of the state.

On the local news, when they aired this story, it WAS STATED that she INDEED does have a medical condition (tyoroid problems) that makes it very difficult to take off weight.

even one of the local female news anchors (she had gained a few pounds since having a child )stated that she had gotten e-mails and letters commenting on her weight.

What this boils down to is the anonimity of the internet. people can hide behind this and blast others with near impuinity.

SO what if she has a few extra pounds for whatever reason. IF she does/can do her job with professionalism and grace....

        WHO THE FRACK cares.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

          .
Given that it seems to only be targeting female anchors, I'm wondering if it's also double standards. No offence to anyone, but if we swapped genders, nobody would be sending hate mail to their overweight MALE news anchor.
But because the female isn't miss buxom booty with fake F-cups, then she's suddenly fat.

So, Greenday... mind answering the question of why not being perfect in every way makes her ineligible as a role model?

That chick is awesome. She certainly has my respect.

I may not be overweight. But I have a lot of things about me that people love to pick on.

              And I tell you what.

I could never, ever, EVER, so eloquently and professionally publicly address people who have picked on me. Not without exploding or starting to swear profusely, or twitching from trying to not swear or explode.

I had a day at work yesterday, I swear, I was just at my wit's end of being picked on for what I look like. And if I hadn't walked away, I would have gotten myself walked out the door for starting to scream and probably get physical with people.

Will any answer that I give EVER satisfy anyone? No, so what's the point? I generally ignore threads when it gets to that point.

Do you know that for a fact?

Seriously, do you know that no male has ever been picked on because of his weight?

I doubt the news station lets her eat on set.

The letter writer is a douche, plain and simple. Why does it matter so much to him that she be an underwear model? She's a news anchor, not a national hero. Do children even look up to news anchors? I was under the impression that most children don't even watch the news.

Why can't she be seen as a positive role model for overweight children? She a successful news anchor who holds a place in the community. Wouldn't that be considered something to aspire to for young children with weight issues? To see that they can become someone relatively important, even if they're not thin?

                      No, no, Siefer.

Don't you know that everybody you ever see who is overweight is that way because they're lazy and eat too much? How can you advocate that someone like that could be a role model?

He does have a point--there is a gender bias against women when it comes to weight/appearence. Yes, males have been picked on due to weight (And I doubt fireheart was implying otherwise) but in a situation like this, a female is more likely to have her weight noticed and criticized than a male.

In a situation like this, a female is more likely to have pretty much everything appearance-related criticized than a male.

QTD for putting it way better than I did.

Hell, as a male there've been a few times over the past few years I'd see a female getting some comment on her wear when I was wearing practically the same thing and didn't get so much as a second glance.

Alternately, you could explain why you believe the question to be an inaccurate summary of your position.

Otherwise, obviously, refusing to answer questions about why you take the positions you do or to explain about them in meaningful ways serves no rational purpose whatsoever, except to give the impression that you've realized you don't *have* any basis for support and would rather run off than admit it.

But asking again, in the hopes that ANYBODY on that side will answer, or even those who are making excuses about why she would be fat rather than declaring it irrelevant... why must someone be without flaws to be a role model (or why is that not an appropriate conclusion to draw from people acting as if merely being overweight were a disqualifier)?

Being obese is extremely unhealthy and causes a host of other health problems. By doing nothing to get rid of her weight, she's saying it's okay to be obese which it isn't. Could she be overweight due to meds or health problems? Sure, but odds are she's fat because just like the majority, she overeats and doesn't exercise.
