New Year's Eve comes around and they want to walk me to another hotel in their chain. One in Salisbury 30 miles away from the ocean.
The ONLY valid reason to "walk" someone who paid in full for a specific type of room months in advance is if, due to some unforseen circumstance (equipment failure, etc.), they have FEWER of that type of room than they have customers who have paid for it in full in advance. Since they already have the money, there's no reason to overbook.

Also, I agreed that it would be a good idea for big-ticket items, and was only disagreeing with your statement that people should do it for everything, and also with the notion that people who have never run into or heard of this problem before should just KNOW to do this.
However you forget in this system of trust, You need to account for the employees with the key not being disgruntled and from doing work in a major electronics store, most things in the back weren't on lock down because of no customers in the back..... employees steal shit all the time.
