I was surprised there was this much advance planning. I know there are some things that have to be staged ahead of time, but I was surprised when my friend who works for the local power company was called to Pennsylvania or New Jersey to stage a few days ahead of time.

Like my father said when requesting mutual aid for a house fire: "It is better to page the extra department and say 'go home, we're good' instead of saying 'shit, they aren't here'"

I have to say hurricane forecasting is better now than ever before. I am quite impressed at how, while the hurricane was as far south as the Florida area they were able to predict with some precision that it will make a hook into the northeast, which many years ago would have probably taken us by surprise or wouldn't have been found out until the day before. If you look at the models that they used days before, the path the hurricane took was pretty damn similar.

The only thing they were a little surprised by was after it made its turn, it increased its speed and made landfall an hour or two before they predicted, which was apparently actually a beneficial thing because that meant it wasn't dead on high tide when that happened.

I think that Brown wanted the response to be slow. If it had, it would have been a huge talking-point for the Republicans.

"Where is our President? Why is he on the campaign trail when he should be organizing the hurricane response!"

When he reacted "too quickly," they had to come up with something to attack him on.

Hey, isn't that a conservative motto?

        I'm kidding, everyone, I promise! I couldn't resist.

Of course the guy who headed the Federal Emergency Mismanagement Agency during Katrina is going to be critical of Obama acting quickly regarding Sandy. After all, Obama doing the right thing shows just how badly Browm mis-handled Katrina.
