  • Woman drives on sidewalk.. to avoid school bus

    This is her punishment:

Honestly I think she needs more than 2 days of public shaming and a $250 fine.

We need more "creative" punishments like this. It just boggles my mind how she isn't at all remorseful for driving so carelessly, especially near school busses!

30 days suspension? Meh. Two months would have been better. I'm sure when she gets her license back she'll just continue to do it.

Can they give her jail time for repeated offenses? If the shaming doesn't do it, maybe a few days (or weeks) in a jail cell will get the point across.

I only saw something like this once when I was on school (I have it up on CS somewhere), and a couple more times after I got my car. IMO she should lose her licence for 4-6 months, her impatient ass should just wait.

I disagree with jail time. We need to use jail only to lock up violent offenders. Non-violent offenses; we need different solutions.

Shaming works for me. She was an asshat. Now everyone knows shes an asshat.

The behavior is not likely to be repeated.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

What makes you think she'll wait that long? Not all people with suspended licenses see that as a valid reason to not drive at all.

Golden opportunity for a local cop wanting to meet his ticket quota. Use the system to find her home address, stake out a route that she's likely to travel (the one where she tried to pass the school bus is a good one). Car matching the description of hers shows up? Run the plates - if a match, pull her over (suspicion of much-publicized person with suspended license driving it). She doesn't have her license because it's (duh) suspended? Free trip to the station - and a better "catch" than someone doing 5MPH over the limit.

I think they should take her license and car, and never give either one back.

Two very different opinions. One person thinks she won't be a repeat offender now that she's been shamed, even though she's already shown she couldn't care less about what she did or her punishment. The other thinks she'll be quite like tons of other offenders who give society the middle finger and just keep driving and doing her thing.

If you can't guess, I'm sure she'll go right back to endangering lives by being reckless and not caring what happens as a result of her driving.

That's exactly what will happen. She's already proven that she doesn't give a shit about society or their rules. Taking someone's license away isn't really a deterrent. Look at all the people with multiple DUI's and other serious offenses. They're still on the roads because unless someone is tailing them 24/7, it's very difficult to nail them. Even if they do get nailed, all they do is pay some fines.

She is treating this as a joke. Doubt she will stop.

License, yes. Car, no. She should still be entitled (and perhaps required) to sell her car.

It's appears to me that this was not her first time, as they were obviously all waiting for her. (Yes I understand it was probably the first time she was caught by the police) She has no respect for the road or other people on it, the punishment does not fit the crime in my opinion.. I like the "shaming" side of it, but the actual fine and suspension, not big enough, not long enough!

For better or for worse, the only way to find out for sure if she will take this seriously is to wait and see what she does...The cops are likely to be *literally* bound by this restriction.

I find a quotation from the actual article rather telling -- from someone whose child rides the same bus:
"[Hardin] did this almost every day last year," Kelley said. "She won't stop laughing. She's not remorseful, she laughed at every court appearance. She's still laughing, so she needs to be humiliated like this."
