For those like me who hate watching videos.

I don't see a problem. Doesn't seem like there was any mistreatment. When I came home from Afghanistan, I set off the detector for explosives. Had to be taken aside for additional screening. Explained what I did for a living, took my note out from my Major, did the additional search and was on my way.

It is what it is. It's not like terrorists don't use kids to blow people up.

I would like to know what constitutes 'traces'. One part per million? Two parts? Im just curious. There are many chemicals used everyday everywhere you go that could be used in a fashion that could harm people.

Perhaps that is the problem.. any trace at all is considered reason to detain people. Well... one of the problems anyway.

Thanks; I actually prefer written stories because I hate getting caught up in the inevitable ad I'm forced to watch first.

I don't see the problem, either. Children have been used as suicide bombers before, and not just in the current era. It was done during Viet Nam as well. Oklahoma City was domestic terrorism, and McVeigh used . . . wait for it . . . fertilizer as one of his bomb components.

Now don't get me wrong. I happen to think the TSA is a colossal joke. But the mother's complaint about "children" doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

Fertilizer is one of the most common sources of explosives being used.

yeah, sorry, but Im with the TSA here. Yes, it sucks that the girl was detained, but as for common sense, they are specifically trained to treat traces of explosives ( fertilizer in this case) as a possible threat without exception. 'There's no suggestion the traces weren't present, so they had to check.

It's actually the same with drugs; it's possible to trip the methods they use to initially screen passengers for drug smugglers by using a bag that has been used by a druggie. There's some extra screening, if you're clear, you're free to go.

              I learned that from MacGyver.

Of course it is! With the notable exception of organic peroxides (the reason for the limitations on liquids/gels on board aircraft - even though trying to produce them from their component parts under lavatory conditions would result in the bomber getting a facefull of boiling liquid rather than blowing up the plane), explosives are nitrogen-based. The 3 major nutrients in fertilizer (hence the 3 numbers) are nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. Also, one common nitrogen-only fertilizer does double duty as an explosive.

Am I the only one that has a very strange mind?

                    Shit + fertilizer + explosive =

I need to get my mind out of the dunny. Or maybe it's just because I have had too many cocktails and it's 2:30am.

Literally. Manure was an early source of salt peter, an active ingredient in gunpowder.

Then there's the other way shit can be explosive
