This might be a step too far, even for them. Protesting the funerals of children in a small, rural town? Its going to be hard for them to sue anybody if they get lynched and beaten to death. While the nation cheers at the news.
If any of them survive, they're welcome to sue, but they can't get a fair trial anywhere in this country and the case will be tied up in the courts for years or more. I imagine if it made it to the SCOTUS, they might actually change the right to free speech to include tougher hate speech laws rather than vindicate these dickbags in any way shape or form.
I know I would. ;p

The ironic thing is that they cite the First Amendment as their justification for their obnoxious displays (they even picketed the San Diego Comic Con one year!), but it's through an EXCEPTION to the First Amendment that will get them slapped down and kicked out of court - Incitement to Violence. By mocking and taunting people that are directly in their face, they're erasing their own protections. They've had close calls with that so far, but they need to tread VERY carefully to avoid that in this case.

They follow a Calvinist theology, which means that how a man behaves really has no bearing on whether he is saved or not until after God decides that he gets to be saved, and only then does it really matter what a person does.
From Wikipedia on Calvinism:
Basically, we're all damned sinners until God decides at his whim to give us Salvation, at which point we become saved and become capable of being not sinners.
It's a very exclusionist belief system and one that should appeal to people who want to be seen as the moral elite.
^-.-^
No wonder they act like such sociopaths.

I was never more disappointed than to learn I'd missed the counterprotest against them when they came to my state.
In a very weird way, I think the WBC does some good--they bring people together to ridicule them and block their hate. The backlash against their bigotry is great--and they serve as as good an example against lgbt bigotry as the KKK does against racism.

However, I got to put a vulgar post on my blog. I rarely put vulgar posts on my blog but some people bring it out in me

As far as I've read, the Westboro idea is that EVERY SINGLE TRAGEDY IN THE WORLD-- that means every death, every murder, every fire, every mugging, every terrorist attack, every storm and natural disaster, every industrial accident, every single person who dies or is killed in any way, for any overt reason are all God punishing the world over homosexuality.
Homosexuals are the one single sin of sins and every person who dies is laughed at by God as they burn in hell, as punishment for acceptance of homosexuality in the world. That's why these assholes protest at funerals of massacred children.
After watching some interviews with WBC people, I realized why they're so vitriolic. I still don't agree with their viewpoint, but I understand the reason behind their hateful messages, and I understand that they intend for the messages to be harsh, but they don't see them as hateful. I also got to see a good demonstration of who, exactly, they think are God's elect saved and how they tell who's who:
Their thinking is that only the saved love people so deeply that they're willing to condemn their sins openly. If you tell people, "You are disgusting, worthless sinners who deserve to burn in hell as God rejoices in your pain," you LOVE people because you're trying to save them. If you don't say those harsh words, no matter how much you claim to love people, you actually hate them, because you're not doing what it really takes to drive salvation.
A WBC guy was asked directly whether this or that humanitarian (Mother Theresa, etc.) was going to heaven or hell, and the answer was "hell" to every one. Unless you tell people the bad news, you're not telling them the good news that follows.

So just how "opposed" to homosexuality must you be to not go to hell, in their eyes? It seems as if they would not be satisfied until we elect a government that would make homosexuality a capital offense, and anything less than supporting that makes one condemned.
Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, the church's founder was an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and "hates racism of all forms"Last edited by MadMike; 12-17-2012, 11:53 PM. Reason: Please don't quote the entire post. We've already read it.
