Actually that is incorrect, as pointed out previously in the thread. They cannot refuse service based on the person being part of a protected class.

Meaning that they can be in some deep trouble if they refuse service to someone for being black. This is what the Civil Rights movement was about, all those sit-ins?

Now, the business can just say "I refuse to serve you, go away." If they don't give a reason, then the person refused will have a hell of a time proving that the did it based on discrimination, but if the bakery is happily touting, "We refused them because they are GAY" and in that state sexual orientation is a protected class... bakery could be in a whole mess of trouble.

Theoretically, people should be able to choose not to do business with anyone. In practice, there's a good reason for making exceptions.

        Update:

After the bakery was exposed for refusing to bake that cake, the bakery posted a very racist rant on their Facebook page... Then immediately deletes it.

        Article here.

Wow. That Facebook post is full of all kinds of hate.

Not a very Christian sentiment from a self-proclaimed Christian.

Yikes-talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

The journalist was even willing to get the opinion of the bakery, but they refused.

I love the happy ending for the couple though (they're getting their cake free of charge courtesy of some chef on TV). I feel like pointing them in the direction of Adrian Zumbo (one of the recent challenges on Masterchef here was to make this huge-ass wedding cake) or better yet, encouraging them to make a croquembouche (think profiteroles woven together with caramel-I am so planning on having one for my wedding )

Geez, at first I thought their account was hacked, but as I continued to read it it looks as if it's legit.

Got a bullet in your foot? Have a seat right there next to Applebees, please. Thanks.

I made the mistake of reading some of the comments on a few articles about this.

The same collection of ignorance and hate as usual. >_<

You'd think more Christians would have a better understanding of the teachings of Christ.

How does someone who seems to have, up to now at least, been managing to run a reasonably successful business in the early 21st century make a public statement like that?

No, I can accept that. I guess I'd rather have my bigots be up front about their bigotry.

Now that facebook page moves them from the realm of stupid to really stupid. don't they know that once something is posted it can't be unposted.

I'm a part of a pro-equality rights page, and whenever the members said anything remotely criticizing the bakery on it's facebook, they would get cursed out by the owners, then post would be deleted and they're blocked from the page.

These people are going to die out business wise, at this rate.

Unfortunately, there are more than enough bigoted assholes hiding behind false religious freedom to keep them afloat for a while.

I would like to see more examples of their rampant hypocrisy hit the net, however. And not purely for the voyeuristic thrill of watching someone implode under the weight of their own lies.

Apparently, there is a Sweet Melissa Cakes (Facebook) in Covina, CA that is getting fallout over this. However, it seems to be a net win for this Melissa as she is getting a lot of press over taking flack she didn't deserve. Also, she does some awesome work; as she's local to me, I may have to add her to my short list of potential cake-makers.
