  • Activision Blocks YouTube Video on Basis of Copyright Claims

...which was posted as a North Korean propaganda video depicting footage from Call of Duty

No word yet on if those "Let's Play Call of Duty" videos are going to disappear as well.

I saw the video before it was taken down and found it quite amusing. What a bunch of whiners.

Another article on this at Ars Technica.

It's a shame that the NK government just folded; this could have been an interesting test of fair use. Unfortunately, due to the way the DMCA is written, the takedown notice has to be observed regardless of it's merit. >_<

Also, it was pointed out in the comment section at Ars, that the burning American city wasn't burning because of attack by NK - apparently, it's supposed to be some dream about them entering the space age while we collapse under our own decadence... or something.

I kind of figured that, since the NK is so adamant that their ballistic missile work is purely for peaceful purposes. Of course, I wouldn't put it past them to be completely contradictory, either.

I haven't seen the translation of the video yet, so I'm really confused as to what is really being said on it.

From what I understand, Let's Plays are a legal grey area. I think they're considered a derivative work so the copyright is a little different. Although YouTube has pulled game clips that don't have commentary, so straight walkthroughs are likely in more danger than Let's Plays.

Considering some of the better LPers (I'm thinking NintendoCapriSun in particular) have gotten some corporate support, I think LPs are safe for now.

I've bought some games that were due to my enjoyment of their LPs, and I think most gaming companies know that they have a benefit to their publicity. There will always be the overzealous idiots who decide to lawyer up if anyone merely mentions their name on a blog, but the vast majority don't really care.

There's a guy who does Let's Play/Walkthroughs of Nancy Drew games. He also adds this very hilarious commentary to the whole thing. I do believe that he's been supported somewhat by HerInteractive but I'm not sure. (last few games he's done a blind walkthrough to show what he does when making said walkthroughs)

He DID get a mention in a remake of one of the earlier games-his photo was on a bulletin board as Student of the Month (and when he did do this, he spent about five minutes of the video freaking out over it)

As far as I'm aware his clips haven't been pulled yet.

See Sega regarding the Shining series.

And LP'ers don't have anything to worry about. Black Ops 2 for example streamlines it. No, this was Activision simply saying "we have a legal loophole to shut down this propaganda BS" and proceeded to do it.

One of my favorite stories about LP comes from the LP on Shantae for the Game Boy Color. I believe he told his viewers to get the DSi sequel. Way Forward found out about the video and found out he didn't have a DSi, so they sent him a brand new system.
