  • You gave me a bad grade? I'll SUE!

    http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/m...-1226577010609

So long story short, woman receives a low grade on an assignment and was somehow "forced" into changing roles. She's now suing the school.

She's claiming discrimination because she's gay. To me, it sounds like she's just another whiny brat who just wants good grades handed to her and is unhappy she was given the grade she actually earned.

All right... so two separate issues here: how she got the grade she did, and whether, even assuming the absolute worst on the teacher's part, you can sue a school over the grades it issues.

And we have absolutely no way of knowing the former. There's nothing at all in the linked article to say, and the one *it* links to doesn't give anything remotely like enough information on that to make anything other than wild guesses. (Having said that, it does seem to me very difficult to actually earn a *0* in classroom participation.)

I've been in classes that make that real easy. If you miss more than 5ish classes in unexcused absences, you get a 0 in that part of the semester, except in extenuating circumstances. Granted, participation is only 5-10% of the grade. Still, I've known of many students who just don't show up to class and are shocked at their grade. Not sure if that's what happened here, but she's going to have to have some good evidence of true discrimination to win the case.

Plus, if your class involves a lot of participation (i.e. a theater or communication class), and you refuse to take part in whatever exercises they can also dock your grade there.

That is actually quite generous (the missing 5 classes get a 0). The college I attended when not sick..you miss 3 classes you flunk or if you are lucky they just drop you from the class.

According to this article at National Post, she didn't even have to pay to attend, because her father works for the school. Entitled much, is she?

That article also has some more detail about her classroom participation, including alleged swearing and one incident where she broke down and started crying in class.

Add in the fact that she also dragged her father in with her while trying to fight the grade with the institution, and that just makes me think, even more, than she's an entitled twit who should suck up the fact that she received the grade she earned.

So she gets to take the class for free and she's bitching that she received a bad grade? If I recall, you can take classes again. But maybe that is just undergrad. I realize that grad school is a completely different animal but still.

Well, she's claiming that because of this, she couldn't work an internship so she missed out on a lot of money.

Well maybe she should have studied harder or went to class more often or whatever.

                    That was my thought.

Or, you know, maybe just not been a disruptive jerk depending on her daddy's position to keep her from being called on it.
