School officials say mohawk was "too distracting"

I really don't know what to say about this, except possibly that those officials need either a vacation or another line of work ...

The kids are five years old. How much hardcore learning are they doing?

Well if you were to believe the government (both in the US and Australia), we should apparently be like the kids in China and Japan who do nothing but study, study, study.

BIG difference there though....in those countries, teaching is respected. Over in the Western world, teachers seem to be looked down upon.

I wonder if the kids were distracted before class even started. And the rules were very vague. Hell, why not just ban kids wearing their favorite characters in their shirts? Thats about as distracting as a mohawk.

It's just another senseless rule in place to give the appearance of control. Same thing with no hats. Who cares if someone wears hats? Apparently the schools do.

I once saw a news article about a cram boarding school in Japan, a dozzen or two mixed aged children sleeping in one largeish room (perhaps they had desks that collapsed out of the way and this was just an extention of using the same class for each lesson day in day out.

That in and of itself was a bit weird, but the icing on the skeveometer was whilst these children were sleeping (or trying to) the news caster was sat in the middle of the room finishing off his segment.

I'm more shocked at the idea that people still style their hair into mohawks.

                .
Yeah, I remember coming inside from a bitter cold day, one schoolday morning. I had just gotten inside, had my hands full, and was nowhere near my locker. Out came a teacher, bitching at me about my wearing a hat. Sweet mother Goddess, at least let me get to my locker to stow the thing!
