I was more expecting a story where as they were deaf they didn't hear something tragic happen and were charged with negligent death or something.

Right? That makes me wonder what society has lost over the past century.

Don't make this into a society thing. A couple thousand years ago, a baby would've been left out to be eaten by wolves for any number of reasons. A century ago, racism and misogyny were not just tolerated, but the promoted ways of thinking. Society is what it is, and every version of it has had their problems. These people are just monsters.

This isn't a society thing, nor is it a deaf or handicapped thing. This is virtually no different than any other "baby killed by shaking" tragedy.
