  • I would never EVER want to work for this restaurant!

Floating around the internet today is a now-deleted craigslist posting for a line cook job with contained 44 requirements potential applicants were expected to meet. Some are reasonable, others are downright insane.

Here's a few of the crazier ones (any added emphasis is mine):

    - You are coachable - Don't get defensive or act like you already know everything

    - You never complain - especially about things that the chef can't control, like customer requests, the hours the restaurant is open, how busy or slow it is, etc.

    - You show respect for the chef, the food, how they want things done in THIS restaurant (not in any of your previous restaurants), and your co-workers. More specifically, co-workers to be respected includes dishwashers, prep cooks, bussers, expeditors and food runners, but does not necessarily include FOH staff. Servers are fair game.

    - You always show up for work, even if sick as a dog. Let the Chef see that you're really sick and send you home.

    - You stay until all the work is done, without asking to leave early. Ask if there's anything else to do before leaving.

    - Even if you think your way is better, do it in the way the chef would want you to do it. If you must suggest something, do it in private. Or phrase it so it seems like it was the chef's idea. Let the chef save face.

    - "Yes, chef!" or "Oui, chef!" is the only proper response in a traditional kitchen. All questions to cooks will be phrased such that "Yes, chef!" is the correct and only response. If it sounds militaristic, that's where it came from.

    - You are able to work double shifts for many days without days off

    - You expect to give more than you get

The full list can be found here.

This restaurant is obviously run by someone with an ego problem because he won't tolerate complaints, always has to be right and expects to take credit for every good idea his employees come up with.

Not to mention this is for a LINE COOK job, which is I believe at the bottom of the ladder as far as cooking jobs go.

God help me if I ever have to work a boss as demanding as this guy is.

Congratulations, you found the ad for the behind-the-scenes cooks on Gordon Ramsay's show.

Acording to the article, the workplace is a tiny cafe. O_o WTF? With that laundry list of requirements, I was expecting a five star TV chef restaurant at least. Hopefully, the ad was taken down cuz someone hit the boss with a clue by four and persuaded him he was being unreasonable and would never hire anyone with such perfectionism.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

          I got a good rule

-When someone presents you with a laundry list of rules, tell them to fuck off and hope they go out of business.

I kinda like it. Not because I'd want to work there, but because I like knowing from the listing not to apply. Beats getting hope worked up, and it's far better than only learning how demanding they are after you're hired.

Sounds to me like someone who confused job hiring with job training.

My guess is the owner has been through a lot of line cooks and thought he'd save himself trouble by weeding out "unmotivated employees" by spelling out the expectations before the hire.

And didn't bother to think that he'd never get the position filled with such unreasonable demands.

Who wants to bet the cafe will be out of business within the year?
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

If there's any justice in the world, they will be.

Well gee, I can't imagine why there's an open position. I mean, who would give up an amazing job like that?

Seriously, this reminds me of some of the things that are expected in Korean/Asian society, especially seeing the term 'save face'. That's a very Confucian way of looking at things in my experience. Also the working long hours for many days with no days off (most students never get any days off, let alone adults), coming to work sick so the boss can see for himself that you're sick (it's all about show), never complaining, your ideas are the boss's ideas for all intents and purposes because the boss is the authority figure and deserves all the praise, never talk down to the boss in front of other people because it will bring shame, etc.

All these kinds of things still rankle me to no end living and working in this culture >.>

That's why Tiger Mom brings out violent impulses in me. She seemed to forget that her kids were humans a mind and needs of their own. But her being right was more important than her kids mental health. And she had the gall to act like some kind of selfless martyr. As if forcing her will on her kids without their say is anything but completely selfish.

Bitch makes me see red too. Can't wait for the day one of her kids realises they're an adult, tells her to go fuck herself then skips off never to see her again.

I'll always love the story I read of a student who had a tiger mom. She shoved into medical school, forcing him to become a doctorate, standard tiger mom ways.

Graduation day, he handed her his diploma saying "You seem to want this a lot more than I do." And skipped off to do his own thing.
