I honestly think that's a chicken-and-egg problem. Little girls often like garishly overdone sparklies - glitter, sequins, rhinestones, whatever. Whether companies market the glitteryness to girls because they like it, or they like it because it's what society/marketing offers them, it'd be hard to separate cause from effect, at this point.

Wasn't able to take the first quiz (kept kicking me to the Korean Disney site), but I got a tie between Jasmine and Ariel for the second quiz.

As far as the princesses getting marketing makeovers, the main reason I don't like them is because they are looking more and more the same. What's the point of having different characters if they all just look the same? And the mouths just look... wrong to me.

I've rarely seen an oriental Anime character, they seem to just paint white black or alien skin tones.
            But Mulan has been whitewashed.

Now finding out the Ice Queen is Scandinavian and the princesses blonde you cant really say "oh no not more blonde Disney princesses." outside of Bjork I can't think of one Scandinavian that isn't blonde, it's kinda their thing, there was probably a spartanesque pit at some point in history.

I almost mentioned her, but wondered if anyone remembered the Black Cauldron. One of my favorite book series, totally turned into hack mush by Disney. The movie and the book bear little resemblance to one another other than the names of the characters.

Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

I might have seen black cauldron once, but Disney has vaulted way too many movies for no damn reason, the only one with merit is Songs of the South, but TBH I would rather it still be available even if not branded as a Disney movie but under touchstone or any other Buena vista brand.
It might have been ill thought out, but the bits I saw were good and at one point were released on their own.

Oh, no, Black Cauldron's vaulted for a reason.

It's not one of their...finest works. And not for race reasons like Song of the South, simply because they absolutely butchered the story. They had a heroic spoof story and didn't know what to do with it.

I hate the loss of movies, even bad ones, or even questionable ones.
A movie may have been a flop, but someone somewhere should be allowed to re release the shittiest movie ever made in digital format, hell most of the shittiest ones DO get DVD releases.

Disney should not be embarrassed by their failures, learn from them yes, but not lock them away for fear of ridicule from later generations.

It was re-released. A couple of years ago for the 25th anniversary. Song of the South is buried so deep it's silly. Non realistic portrayal of post-civil war south aside, it was somewhat ground breaking with its blending of live action and animation.
It's last theatrical release was in 1986:
nd in 1986 for the film's own 40th anniversary and in promotion of the upcoming Splash Mountain attraction at three of Disney's theme parks.
I saw it. I was 3 or 4, but I saw it in theaters. It was really bizarre, and kinda scary and sad.

eta: It should also be noted that the actor who played Uncle Remus was the very first black actor disney ever hired, but it looks like it was his final film.

The Black Cauldron is out and available, and likely won't get vaulted again, since it's not a title that they can really cash in on by artificially limiting its availability.

I recently saw the VHS of Black Cauldron, and it seemed to be from right before the move to DVD. If so, a couple years ago seems about right for it to come around again.

I remember seeing this when I was a kid in the early 70's. I'm not sure if I saw it in the theatre or on TV, but I remember I loved it.

I think we have to remember that it is a product of its time, and that it has some great stories in there irrespective of the other problems with the film.

The problem with the Black Cauldron wasn't that the original story was a hero spoof. It's that they tried to spoof a genuinely heroic story, and did so by combining elements of TWO novels: the Book of Three, and the Black Cauldron (the 1st and 2nd of the Prydain series respectively). By combining both books, they cherry picked elements and did not have a cohesive story to tell.

Queen Achren isn't mentioned. Neither is Gwydion. The real story of the destruction of the Cauldron, which was one of self sacrifice, is completely obliterated. Of course, the Horned King (Arawn) isn't defeated until the end of the 5th book, the High King.

Sorry for rambling . . . this is one of my favorite series and I really hated how the story got butchered. I'd love to see a live action version done right, but that's not too likely.

I never knew it was a book let alone a series till this thread, you mean to say that's another one to chalk up to someone else's idea?

Mind you id probably find fox and the hound and lady and the tramp to actually be anthropomorphic adaptations of something if I looked into it.
