Actually, Lady and the Tramp is very nearly original. Inspired in part by an animator watching the antics of his cocker spaniel. In the old movies the opening credits show which book/story it's based on.

A Disney Editor has responded to defend the makeover.

And in doing so seems to have missed the point. Her defense is

A) Its not a new picture, its an old picture that they glammed up ( ...so? )
B) It doesn't matter what they do to Merida, its still Merida ( Point missed. )
C) Because she likes sparkles, all women must like sparkles. ( Cus all women are the same, duh )
D) Her daughter turned Cinderella into an astronaut by changing her clothes.
E) Changing a princesses clothes does not change a princess ( Except in the case of D )
F) She describes Merida to a T but still doesn't grasp why Merida would not dress that way.

I can see where she thinks she's coming from, but she doesn't seem to grasp why people were upset in the first place.

Merida is brave. And strong and spirited and willful and intelligent and all the things that I want my daughter to be. She’s a girl to look up to, no matter what she looks like.

It does matter what she looks like if you're reinforcing beauty standards and body image issues to young girls. Regardless of how many positives you want to slap onto her personality. That actually makes it worse. Because there's a factor a girl would look up too that's not obtainable and thus they could never truly be like their role model.

You're saying here's a girl that has it all AND unrealistically good looks, sucks to be you.

All of the Sparkle dolls look like shit. Hers looks vaguely worse because her animation style is so different than the others, but every one of them looks like cheap crap. Honestly, it looks like someone got a license, then just churned out whatever looked close enough and called it a day. Whoever made it, it's not for sale at the Disney online store.


Here is a picture of the official celebration Disney did inducting her as the 12th Princess at their park. Apparently the changes they keep making to the promo stuff is purely to sell more crap to people who have to have one of everything.

[eta] I did some looking, and it seems the Sparkle dolls are a Target exclusive manufactured by Mattel. Oh, and it's been around since at least December, so it's not exactly "new".

Tera from radio dead air's wtfiwwy live segment had a Merdia doll tail end of the year beginning of this, that looked a bit sparkly, so yeah maybe old news is new news to people who should be in the loop regarding these things.

Re Astronaut Cinderella, well she can still be a princess as that is a marrage/blood line title not a job description.
The only way it turns false is in the cases of not royal by birth princesses choose to not mary into royalty and join NASA instead, but Cinders was blue blood.

I'll admit to spending a full 30s trying to figure out what princess Sophia Grace was suppose to be until reading the caption telling me it was Sophia Grace. I am old.

Speaking of blondes, I just remembered that, as a kid, I owned a toy chest with a variety of Disney characters depicted on it and it had Aurora as a brunette. As I've rarely watched Sleeping Beauty it really confused me for years.

The problem with the Black Cauldron wasn't that the original story was a hero spoof. It's that they tried to spoof a genuinely heroic story, and did so by combining elements of TWO novels: the Book of Three, and the Black Cauldron (the 1st and 2nd of the Prydain series respectively). By combining both books, they cherry picked elements and did not have a cohesive story to tell.

I think I'm still able to enjoy the film because I've yet to read the book series (not for a lack of trying). I'm not going to say it's good (Hell, in my opinion it's paced horribly), but at the same time I don't regret picking up the DVD; although I do wish it had a commentary of some sort… yet can understand why it doesn't have one (if I remember correctly the film was made between the passing of the "old guard" of Disney animation and the beginning of the "new guard" and there was a lot of bad blood between them).

I still loved the Horned King as is, and I can't help but think of Gurgi whenever I see Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, now. Be right back, going to go get some crunch'ems and munch'ems…

Quite possible. Honestly, my main issue with the Black Cauldron is that it's not particularly memorable. I remember the ending clearly, but the lead up to it is kinda blurred.
