Sex education isn't all that great at the moment, lack of education and a male pill might lead to people thinking their dick is bulletproof.

Sensible adults who screen themselves regularly and also ensure their partners do too, but who keeps a doctors note on them when they go out to get wankered waking up not even knowing who their partners name is?
I'm not saying that's what happens to everyone on a night out, damn sure ain't me that's for sure, nor am I judging you if that happens to you, if one of you is sparky enough to stick a condom on thumbs up, if not fingers crossed.

it shouldn't be an over the counter drug, it should have some education and risk assessment when prescribing it, just so they know they may still need to use a condom.

it's the lack of sex education I'm worried about, reminds me of the joke
"how can I be pregnant, I put the condom on the banana just like I was shown."

So now, unless a doctor says a man is smart enough, they are too dumb to make informed decisions for themselves?

Education is a separate issue and should be left up to the doctor prescribing it and the eduction system (which, I agree, is in dire need of upgrades).

There shouldn't ever be a barrier to entry to preventing unwanted pregnancies beyond the bare minimum, no matter how fucking stupid (pun intended) some people are going to be.

I don't think that's quite fair. Women have to get a prescription for all forms of birth control except condoms and emergency contraception (Plan B) that is only meant to be taken as a single dose (and is OTC only because so many doctors refuse to prescribe it and pharmacists to fill it due to their religious beliefs).

I do think this particular form of birth control should definitely be administered by a qualified physician in the office to ensure safety and efficacy. I think most guys would have a hard time injecting anything into their penis (a few outliers notwithstanding )
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

Well seeing as it's an injection then ouch, it's (this and other male birth control research) mostly touted as the male pill, even if it is not in pill form.

But I was under the impression women were explained the pros and cons of going on the pill and I would hope still advised to use condoms for STD's sake, so what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

But if people want to fuck without a condom cos one is on the pill, I am not going to be moved when one finds the other gave them something nasty, getting an STD check up kinda spoils the atmosphere prior to engaging in a one night stand, hence why no one does so and use protection instead.

Hence my bias towards long term partners, single men should still be using condoms (outside of religious grounds, but I think they would frown upon birth control in general) as I don't think pubs and night clubs have an insta check* allowing you to know your would be drunk fumble hasn't got anything nasty outside of a possible bath tub of ice and a kidney removal.

*just stick your dick in this box and it will tell you what you've got
CONGRATULATIONS, THIS BOX IS CONTAMINATED WITH 15 STD'S 13 OF WHICH YOU DID NOT HAVE UNTIL NOW.

The method brought up by the OP is an injection of a gel into the urethra; it sits near the prostate and kills sperm as it is released. It has to be washed out with another solution to reverse the effects.

There is a male BC pill in the works as well, but that's a horse of a different color.

Women are counseled on birth control, how to make the best choice, and the need to continue to use condoms to prevent STDs, yes.

I would think men would be. I know a friend of mine who got a vasectomy got this kind of counseling as well (he's been happily married for 20 years and cheating isn't a concern to him or of him, so he didn't pay it much mind). But certainly they should be counseled on this as women already are (or should be).
