  • seriously?*facepalm*

several children were "severely traumatized" when a 6 year-old classmate brought a toy "gun" on the bus, the child received detention and loss of busing privileges for 2 weeks.

    story here

Mind you, this was a 1 inch toy gun from a lego set.

zero tolerance really does equal zero brains.

Why do these schools continue with these horrible policies?
Why aren't the parents demanding the school board make changes?

We have to feel safe from the terror of guns in our schools!

Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

What, do you guys not feel threatened by one inch lego guns?

Isn't the issue here that someone yelled out about the gun?

Since the kid basically pulled a "Fire!" I'm not sure why they didn't just punish the child trying to start a panic or make an extremely poor joke and leave the child that brought the Lego piece alone.

I'm thinking someone thought it would look bad if they didn't punish both since the sine qua non of the whole situation was the toy. Still, that's more than a bit daft.

What's even more freakishly over-reactive is the 7-year-old who was suspended for throwing an imaginary grenade (as it a handful of air) into a box that he was imagining contained evil so that he could save the world.

Registered on here to give everyone an update. Superintendent decided not to issue any punishment as this was an overreaction and the fact that the bus driver didn't use any intelligence.

No. He tried to swallow it in a vain attempt to get rid of the evidence of possession, and choked to death.

Here's the part that's messed up. The reporter in this story did a bit of editorializing:

But perhaps the hyper-caution is for good measure: six school shootings have occurred on school campuses since December, including the horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and six educators dead.
Of course, the Sandy Hook shoot was an adult who didn't even attend the school! So yeah, banning toy guns is going to do such a great job of preventing the next school shooting.
