  • Girls derided for starting feminist group

The leader, Jinan Younis, wrote a piece detailing their experiences for the Guardian.

Basically, after being catcalled on a school trip, she wanted to have a group to talk about the pressures being female caused. At an all-girls' school.

Her male peers have been attacking the group ever since.

Her school has only suggested that maybe they, the girls, take down the images and posts being attacked.

Just kind of highlights some of the problems still occurring in the backdrop.

Not surprising. I'm glad to see it's gaining momentum. I hate when I see guys being complete assholes towards women. Makes us normal guys look bad.

So many people think that because women have equal rights legally, that feminism is no longer necessary. Problem is women still get treated like crap by a lot of guys. This kind of behavior by men (And women) need to be called out publicly and shamed.

The problem here is the perception attached to the terminology.

I'm not certain that the term "feminism" and all related permutations haven't been irreparably poisoned by those who would use the cry for equality to become the oppressors.

This does nothing to excuse the reactions of those who attacked them for it (it's indefensible in either direction), but it would explain why it happened. Their attackers are still acting like a group of uncivilized trolls, regardless of any justification they might claim.

Also, I find it curious that Neil Strauss (the author of The Game, being tangential to another recent thread) is quoted in the comments as stating in an interview, when asked about feminism, "Here's the deal. Anyone who hates something feels threatened by it. A guy who says he hates feminism (a) doesn't understand or know feminism, and (b) is scared of powerful women. Most attacks come from fear."
