Motion for the AVN to be disbanded

    Second linky

So we have the AVN (Australian vaccination network) who are ironically, anti-vaccine. I've mentioned links before about how people are getting around the laws introduced to increase vaccination rates, but this one is the best bit of news so far.

A senator (former doctor) introduced the motion in Parliament, to ask that the AVN be disbanded. The motion was passed.

Is this a binding resolution with legal force?

If so, it would never fly in the US. Crazy is allowed here; that's why the KKK is allowed to exist. First Amendment.

Which might seem like it sucks given how dangerous these people are. I have to keep reminding myself that protecting nuts protects my rights to say what I want to about other things I don't like.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

Wasn't there a L&O episode relating to vaccination? *wanders off to ponder*

Free speech in the US is not without exceptions. You cannot, for example, legally make a death threat, even as a joke.

I see this as going in the same direction. You can have any sort of organization, unless it is harmful to others. Which anti-vaccination clearly is, except to nutjobs.

This would be freedom of association more than speech.

It would be both actually. We can't say that someone who advocates a position contrary to the scientific evidence is breaking the law, because scientists do that all the time and sometimes are found to be right to do so. It would chill the process of science in the long run.

Plus, there is the issue of autonomy in health care; the right to make one's own decisions.

I don't like these people but banning them seems to create more problems than it solves, at least as far as the US is concerned.

...simply proving even more that these fuckers should be shut down and told to fuck the hell off.

It's almost unbelievable the dross coming from their mouths!! (Fingertips?) I swear they're worse than the Yank vehemently anti-abortion leagues. At least that lot can occasionally speak like semi-civilised people.

Funnily enough, the anti-abortion nuts down here generally don't make too much of a fuss in the media. They might protest outside abortion clinics, but otherwise generally only attack those that are having abortions specifically, rather than going after all women. (I'm heavily pro sex-ed in schools as well as pro-choice. A number of the pro-lifers I know are also very pro sex ed)

The anti vaccine nuts on the other hand...it's just one stupid comment after the other, coupled with falsehoods and out of date information.

I love how they want the senator to "do some research or go and upgrade your qualifications." It would be hilarious if these idiots weren't causing so much trouble for the poor kids that are being infected with easily preventable illnesses.

You know, the irony of that is that doctors, like teachers and a number of other qualifications, go through professional development all the time. While teachers might be looking at new methods kids learn, I'd imagine that doctors would be looking at new medications, techniques and maybe some counselling on their bedside manner. Just proves how idiotic that person is.

I have to do 30 hours of professional development every 2 years to renew my license. It's similar with physicians.

That nutjob threw that out there because she had nothing else; she simply showed how irrational her arguments really are and made a laughingstock out of her self.
