I've been doing direct deposit for something like a decade, now. Our payroll is handled by ADP, and there's never been a hitch. Plus, I get paid whether I'm at the office or not and it's in my bank account that morning, without me having to wait for a paper check to be handed out.

I too have had direct deposit for well over a decade. It's nice, because there aren't any checks to lose, or have to deal with getting deposited. The money is always in the account by midnight on payday. 15 years of direct deposit, and there was only one problem. For some reason, the agency that handles it...had a system meltdown, and had to send out "live" checks. Good thing I actually *look* at the stubs, otherwise I would have been bouncing checks all over the place

Back on topic, my boss has always tried to save money by hiring interns or other part-time people. Mainly so he doesn't have to pay benefits. Of course, it actually backfires, since he spends more to constantly train people...and usually has 2-3 people handling what 1 full-time person could accomplish. But, I guess that's why he's in charge

I don't think there's a company in Australia that hands out manual pay any more, everyone pays by direct deposit.

Pretty much this. I now get my payslips via email, which came in handy very recently when my group certificate had a discrepancy on it. Turns out that the company had a name and ABN (Aussie Business Number-req'd for tax purposes IIRC) change sometime in March and failed to tell the staff. Short version, my group certificate did not include the more recent shifts I'd worked in that financial year. They realised and sent me another group certificate with the ABN change and my updated shifts.

Luckily the tax office told me just to put them separately as they'd be automatically combined afterwards.

The payslips also break it down shift-by-shift. I also get a little extra for laundry (that's per shift I work, so I can earn up to around $5 extra )

What banks demand authorization before doing direct deposit? I'd think they'd be leaping to have people streamline the process.

I was wondering the same thing... my bank has never had a problem with having money put into an account... hell, they will do everything they can to get people to stop giving them paper checks to process.
