Except usually it's pronounced "Hay-soos" rather than Jesus.

Which makes Tim Minchin's song "I Love Jesus" about 10 times funnier with that pronounciation.

Re the Messiah thing, am I the only one who thought "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"

It's not a name I'd pick but as far as weird baby names go it's pretty mild. I don't understand why the judge cares, its not like she's even being forced to be near the child in any way.

Considering that they were debating over the last name when the first name came into contention, I can see the judge's reasoning on picking Martin for the kid's name. As well, I can see the reasoning as to why Messiah would be a bad name for a kid in that region. Still, I don't know if she had the grounds to order that change, at least so far as to pick the baby's first name. Even if it was a good compromise.

In terms of names to get you beat up. I have a friend named Crystal Shanda Leer. My friend Izzy's initials spell I.D.I.O-T. And my friend once taught a class with two brother's name Orangejello (Oh-ron-je-low) and Lemonjello (Le-mon-je-low). Sometimes parents are just mean or stupid when naming their kids, if every stupid name became a court case there would be no time to try real crimes.

My Grandfather's legal name was Will. It was on his birth certificate and everything. However, sometimes when he would sign for things they would insist he signed as William, despite that not being his name. He had one major issue with a bank over that. He had to bring in all of his papers and be like "My name is WILL. Just Will."

I am to assume Leer is the family name and although it is a play on words Sandra would be a better safer middle name that keeps the pun working but allows her to go by Sandra if she did not wish to be called Crystal.

Some names are just asking for trouble, others are more innocuous until you reach immaturity, I had to hand write a letter addressed to a Virginia Crank, yes I had to re write that a dozen or more times before I got to the part where I applied for a job, just as well I didn't get it as I would probably slip up on my first day.

My stepbrother's first name was Billy; I wonder if he ever went through that.

As for Crystal Leer, neither of those is odd enough to cause trouble so long as she doesn't bring up the middle name.

As someone with a relatively common name, I can tell you from experience that kids don't need a weird name to pick on you. Likewise, having a different name doesn't automatically make you the target for ridicule as a child.

It's not popular, but it's not unheard of. According to m.names.whitepages.com, there are 183 people named Judas in the United States, as of February 2011, with 2008 being the heir of its popularity in this country. Also, Delaware has the most people with that name per capita.

And since we're talking about names, and this topic is about a kid named Messiah, let's talk about that name. This woman was not the first person to name their child that. According to the same website cited above, currently in the U.S., there are 124 people with the first name of Messiah. (And 172 with it as a last name.) If you include those who have died, there have been 2,308 people in this county alone with Messiah as their first name. It enjoyed its greatest popularity in 2010, and New York has the most Messiahs per capita.

So history is kinda against the judge here....

I have worked with 2 people named Jack. Not named John and called Jack. Their name IS Jack. And that is not that uncommon.

I also know a guy named Robbie. Not Robert. His birth certificate lists Robbie as his first name.

I was unaware that Jack was a 'pet name' for John.

Mind you I still don't know why Dick is a short form of Richard, having typed that though, I have not also gone on to investigate.

Billy-Bob, just automatically assumed to be literally so not a shortening of their legal name William Robert, but aside from Mr Thornton, it has always come across as a 'Hick name' and one I've only encountered in fiction, where magistrates would not worry having parents or siblings with similar names.

Really? It's very common. The most famous of which may well have been President John F. Kennedy, aka Jack Kennedy.

I don't think he was ever called that over here, well not in my lifetime, having said that I might have just assumed him to be a brother if they did not say President.

None of the Jacks I've known ever said "my name is John but call me Jack" in the way someone might prefer Dave or Tony over the official version.
They were called Jack and I just assumed that their birth certificate would say Jack.

As unlike Will or Bill/Billy it's not as stand outish as an alt.

Then you use have missed Lloyd Bentsen's epic smack down of Dan Quayle in their vice presidential debate. Since many had questioned his youth and inexperience, Quayle had made a point of comparing himself to JFK. After he did it yet again in the debate, Bentsen was ready, and unleashed his bomb, which went something like this:

"I knew Jack Kennedy. I worked with Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Jack Kennedy."

One of the all time best political bitch slaps EVER. Many people believe Quayle never recovered from that one. The look on his face at the time was priceless.

...and yet he won the election, because people hardly ever actually vote based on the vice-presidential candidate.

                          (2008 being an exceptional case.)

I don't think any presidential election has ever been won or lost bases on the vp debate. I also think that had it been Bentsen vs. Quayle for President, Bentsen would have mopped the floor with Danny boy, this debate being only part of the reason.

But this remains one of the best debate slams in my lifetime, and also served as a great example of Jack being a nickname for John in general, and of JFK in particular.

I don't think we televise the VP debates, least not on terrestrial TV, maybe on BBC News 24 and Sky News and Freeview was not an option when Clinton was around, hell I am not even sure we had Channel Five by then.

Mind you I don't watch TV except for Dr Who on BBC iPlayer so although I know who the president is, I do not know or care who the VP is or which party they represent.

Simple matter being, I can not vote for either side, so I just hope the guy you vote for isn't a total knobshank.

Generally speaking, no matter who you vote for or who wins, the winner is still likely to be a total knobshank.
