  • So you ignore the good stuff he's done and instead complain about him being gay....

    http://mumbrella.com.au/target-stand...plaints-174386

There are a few other articles out there about this, but this one better sums up my feelings on it.

Before we start, Target in Aussieland does not have any links with the Target in the US except in name and possibly logo only.

Anyway, lately they've been using Gok Wan in an ad campaign putting together outfits for customers, which for one particular ad, also promoted their bra fitting service (I have not used it). For those who don't know who Gok Wan is, he hosts/hosted "How to look good naked" in the UK.

The issue with the ads is not the display of women parading around in their underwear. It is not the use of the women in the ads. No, the issues are for two different things:

    1) he's gay.
    2) he uses the term "bangers" to refer to breasts in the ads.

A bunch of busybodies decided to complain to the ad standards people about it. Luckily the board cleared target (in relation to the bangers comment) and target is standing firm, stating that they are not going to pull their ads just because people don't like seeing an openly gay man helping women feel good about themselves.

Seems to me it would be, if anything, worse with a straight man.

I know of him, but as I don't have a TV I know very little of him and what he does on TV.

We like our camp on British TV (gay or not) from Larry Grayson to Dale Winton and Gok.

As for Bangers, it's not a term I've heard in regards to breasts, in fact as it is another name for sausage (as in bangers and mash) it's doubly confusing.

Oh my god! A gay man? On tv? In an AD?!?!?

Build the ark, collect the animals, bless the holy water, and get packing, the end of the world is coming! God will certainly punish us for this affront!

Or perhaps these people should fucking join the rest of us in 2013.

I only know of him from How to Look Good Naked. Please note that I'm basing the following off the US version (which I HAVE seen more of), so there may be slight differences between the two.

Basically, the aim of the show is to help a woman with low self-esteem feel good about herself. Usually it starts with the host displaying the particular areas that she's hung-up on (stomach, boobs, legs, butt or even her weight altogether-the person is always in bra and panties at the minimum) and posting it out in public. They'll then ask passers-by what they think of the photo (the person's face isn't always displayed) and usually the comments are positive, which are then played back to the woman.*
From there, the woman's old underwear may/may not be burned and it might be replaced with more flattering underwear (the woman will also be properly fitted for a bra). Depending on the needs of the woman, they may also go shopping for clothes that are more flattering to her figure and/or style to boost her confidence.

At the end, she displays her new look to friends, family or passers-by.

There's a US version of the show which involves Carson Kressley and from what I can remember, it didn't involve the burning of underwear.

The other thing I discovered is that the term "bangers" IS his own term for breasts and it's kinda like his own catchphrase. He also tends to use "literally" often.

On top of that, he is very much anti-bullying in any way, shape or form.

ETA: This is one of the ads.

Bangers is a new one to me, and I grew up with Brit tv on the ABC.

But in that vein . . . this is Oz! At one time, you couldn't MOVE for seeing positively portrayed Brit gay men on tv here. The double-entendre is taught in primary school! Whoever these idiots are, they really haven't been paying attention to the Oz psyche.

Actually, from those ads, there's been NO mention of him being gay whatsoever. TV these days also seems to be making less of a big deal about gay characters. I remember an episode of SVU involving a pedophile ring who claimed they were being persecuted. BD Wong's character then states that he was pissed as a psychologist, but also pissed as a gay man. That was it. Nothing about his personal life prior to that.
