    Another related incident

Robert Brown an actor in the series Treme was similiarly detained at a the Macy's Herald Square store

The article also mentions a black woman having a similar experience at the same Brady's store as in the OP.

Granted, but then again there is a difference between having an officer pull you over and question you and an officer pulling you over and being a complete dick and acting as if you had done something wrong.

And on an unrelated note...what actually did the kid buy? I've been hearing that it was a belt and others are saying it was a watch.

A $350 watch *does* make a little more sense than a $350 belt.

Like most things, the economies of effort, risk and reward come into play. If a DA can get 1000 convictions of 'riffraff' for what it would cost him to get one conviction of a 'job creator', then he goes up for reelection with a much larger number of 'criminals off the street' under his belt. Even if nailing the billionaire executive will get the DA mucho-brownie points, it's risky to do so simply because the evidence is not usually as cut-and-dried as someone found with stolen watches in a bag.

Low risk, high reward behaviour will win out over high risk, high reward behaviour every time.

What makes it newsworthy is the fact that HE SUED THE NYPD. It didn't become news until that. Also he sued them after providing his ID and receipt he was STILL ARRESTED for theft and spent a weekend in jail until the bank said yes, he had the money and yes it is his account. (They wouldn't listen to the underlings at the call center).

I once had a woman in a posh shop tell me bluntly, "You don't look as tho you could afford to shop here" at a time I was there buying lipgloss. I asked to see the manager cuz, well, that was bullshit.

In my experience, the worst thieves are old ladies, young kids and chavs. Most are white.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

Down in Aussieland, the three most common types of thieves are:

                  -bogan women.

-Indigenous people of both genders (sorry, I don't mean to sound racist, but a high number of thefts at my first job WERE involving people of Aboriginal descent. Unlike the stores mentioned, we still treated them like everyday customers, but we also did very thorough bag checks)

-folks between the ages of 17-24.
