Or are we all homophobes/PC fanatics because we no longer use the word "gay" to mean "fun" in conversations?
There are just some people who refer to "gay" as "homosexual" and given that Christmas is meant to be a Christian holiday and all, they'll be the ones screaming that homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to celebrate Christmas or some shit.

My late uncle's ex-wife was called Gay. As in, that spelling, same pronounciation, that was her name. I've never used the word as a slur and still occasionally get the adjective confused with the noun because of it.

I did as a child always giggle during the trailers when one actors name was called out (Footloose or similar film) doing his dance moves to 80's music "... And Mitch Gaylord".

But what about Gay abandon? does that mean that by these new rules this now means renouncing ones homosexuality?

The problem to me isn't so much that they changed the word (at worst, it's a much better update than, say, what's usually done to the fourth verse of "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee") but that the design of the sweater, intentionally or not, emphasizes the change. It reads like "Don we now our FUN (and we want to make sure you know definitely not gay) apparel." Whereas the same words used in a design where "fun" was the same color, size, and style, on the same background, as its surrounding words would not.
"My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."

The background is kind of a red (blue?) herring. If you notice, "apparel" is also on a different background, because of the ornament motif on the sweater. However, there is no reason for it to be twice the size of all of the rest of the words.

That said, Hallmark has apologized and said that it was stupidity and not malice that resulted in the word substitution. I'm willing to go with that.

If the conversation is going to go that way again, Georgia has a town named Cumming.

And of course, Pennsylvania has Intercourse. It's near Blue Ball, Bird-in-Hand, and Paradise.

                    I'm serious.

There's a tiny town in Michigan called Gay. It has a bar that sells merchandise about visiting the Gay bar
