You're right. He really should be run over by a drunk driver, who gets probation for no reason whatsoever.

How about either rehabilitating him so he can contribute to society? Or, failing that, punishing him appropriately without using torture or revenge instead of justice? Nothing will ever bring back those four dead kids - whatever the system does to him now should be in society's best interest.

        • for that matter- and this is getting a bit off- topic for this thread- aside from the moral arguments about prison rape- and I will admit I find it hard to find much sympathy for the victim where they have committed the more serious offences- it's not exactly going to encourage criminals to surrender (relatively) peacefully to the police, is it? it's the old "might as well be hung for a chicken as an egg" situation- if his life in prison is made a living hell, then what incentive would he have to avoid committing further crimes? (for instance, if a criminal knows they will probably get beaten to death in prison, then they aren't exactly likely to be put off from trying to shoot their way out of being arrested by the risk they'll be either shot, or given the death penalty.

Unless the prosecutor gets her wish to have the case transferred out of juvenile court, if I understand correctly.

Yeah, yeah, I get it. Petty revenge fantasies are fun. Imagining how a kid who did something horrible and got away with it, then gets horribly raped in prison, makes you feel better.

Unfortunately, it also makes you look like a petty and awful person yourself. Not sure that it's worth it.

Seriously - NOBODY is defending this kid, aside from his mother. Nobody involved in this case, or commenting on this case, or discussing this case, seems to think he is anything other than a horrible person. When the Sheriff was asked why he'd expend resources on tracking down a teenage fugitive, he basically said that the kid had hurt a lot of people and he didn't want to let him get away.

Everybody already hates him. So, why bother with these revenge fantasies? What's the point?

Nope. That’s if she gets her wish. They're still bound by the original sentence, which has the 120 maximum for violation. But if they get it moved now, future violations (because we know it'll happen) will get years instead.

Well, that's something, I guess. I mean, it's unlikely that he'll suddenly stop being dumb, right?

One hopes he'd learn, but I think it might take a few stints through the system.

And time away from his parents.

though i will admit to SOME sympathy for the kid- in the sense that while he's an asshole, it sounds like he was made an asshole by how he was brought up. It doesn't mean he should get away with it, but if he CAN be given actual morals...

Difficult... If you want someone to learn something - like, actual morals - then first there must be some kind of realization that they need that. Or, in his case: the realization that he actually did something wrong.

If there are no consequences for wrongdoing, if someone is excused from accepting responsibilities for their actions, how can we expect them to learn from them? How are they supposed to realize that this was wrong, if Mommy and Daddy make it all go away?

Now, I'm not a fan of the US prison system, with huge, disproportionate jail sentences for nonviolent crimes. Selling a few joints at a school shouldn't get a kid thrown in jail for 5, 10, 20 years.
But neither am I a fan of a kid killing four people while driving drunk, and getting off scot-free. That's equally wrong, IMO.
