Sheryl Sandberg Launches 'Ban Bossy' Campaign to Empower Girls to Lead

Personally I think this is the wrong means to an end. Maybe my memories are outdated, but I never recalled "Bossy" being a gender-specific word, and it was used to put down bossy people for both males and females. If their belief that the word discourages strong females later in life, I would expect the same thing to have affected males who were equally labeled as such if they were pushy or too assertive.

The word at least back when I was in school, was used negatively against people who refused to act as a team member where the activity was not supposed to give one person defacto leadership. We should still discourage that kind of behavior.

I agree that there should be more gender equality in regards to leadership roles. I also agree that there is a problem, across all age groups, of people discouraging roles for women by labeling a powerful woman as a "bitch" or a "feminazi," but banning the word "bossy" entirely as if it's a sexist term now is, IMO, the incorrect way to attack the problem.

Detect cases where students are actively discouraging a leader for sexist reasons, and put an end to it, for sure. However making a blanket proclamation that the word "bossy" is not PC and should be banned from schools is not going to fix the problem. Unless there's studies out there that illustrate a change in the meaning of the word in the last 20-25 years from an "overly aggressive leader" to an "overly agressive female leader."

    *facepalm*

First of all, since when has the word "bossy" been exclusively aimed at females? I don't know about anyone else, but I heard it used to describe both boys and girls who like telling people what to do.

Second of all, how do they hope to ban this word? Do they want to make it a "bad word" (like what they're trying to do with "retard")? Or does she want to make it illegal to say it?

Third: Even if she does ban the word, people will just come up with other, more "politically correct" terms describe bossiness. It will then be a matter of time because the new word is considered offensive and people like her will want to ban it.

This is one of the silliest things I've heard in a long time that I could have easily mistaken it for an onion article.

And another thing: As someone pointed out in youtube comments (of all places), bossy is a lot nicer than other B words. And this whole "I'm not bossy, I'm the boss" thing is obnoxious.

Talk about living up to every bad liberal/feminist stereotype.

In my personal experience, bossy stopped being used to describe boys around the age of 8. I know I was called a bossy little bitch by a teacher around the age of 12 (forgot something in the class room and overheard it as I was about to go in) and shit like that never really stopped happening. On that note, I think this campaign is being done in a rather stupid way, but that's like just about any campaign against whatever.

Why is this the one word that is somehow undermining an entire gender? I wasn't aware it had any gender connotation whatsoever. There's no doubt ingrained sexism is a serious problem, but this seems like such a stupid place to try and begin to fix it. Especially given it seems to be a two fold problem.

Here's a direct counterpoint that says it better than I can as well as a startling study on how "bossy" women treat other women in business from the same author.

Its a complex, multifaceted issue and this is an idiotic way of going about trying to do something about it. Never mind that she seems to just pull facts out of her ass without any references. I'd like to see some actual research on the subject to better understand how to address it, not just her opinion and personal anecdotes.

Better bossy than being a bitch. As common as the term "bitch" is nowadays, that's one term I take great offense at being called.

I have a feeling the teacher might have been accurate on that account.

Could we at least bad Modern English? I've no qualms with the more antiquated varieties…

Yes because it discriminates against people who only speak other languages.

Now, I've heard grown women who are being assertive referred to as 'controlling' or 'bitchy', but never 'bossy'. This is a term for kids as far as I can tell.

And while I'm all for teaching girls to be assertive, I have to say...the vast majority of the acutally bossy kids I've encountered in my life- are girls. Despite the stereotypes, in my experience boys are more likely to be willing to compromise when it comes to playing etc, and much less likely to freak out if some other kid isn't following their rules or doing something the way they think it should be done (for instance, once at the library my son was coloring outside the lines and this little girl was seriously hysterical because he wasn't coloring inside the lines).

Heh. That isn't where I was going.

There are many words in the English language that are offensive to someone. The first one that springs to mind is niggardly. Despite the fact it has nothing to do with the other word that sounds very close to it, some people are offended by it. Then we can move on to retarded especially when it is not being used to describe a mental condition. Or how about woman, it has man in it and some how implies that a woman is a partial man (I forget the PC spelling off hand). Of course we've got man...as in fireman, postman, etc. There are women who perform those jobs. I'm sure there are several more....
So we will limit the English language to pronouns...

are you serious? you may as well oppose female since it contains male. Fireman/postmen etc is more reasonable to object to, albeit my personal opinion is there are better things to be dealing with first. ( for example, there is a pay gap between women and men.)
