  • Shooting in Las Vegas, A Failed "Revolution"

This past Sunday morning, a husband and wife entered into a CiCi's Pizza franchise, approached two Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officers on their lunch break, and executed them at point blank range.

They left Swastikas, "Don't Tread On Me" flags, and a note that has yet be made public on the officers' bodies before collecting their pistols and ammunition.

The two shooters then crossed the street and entered WalMart, shouting that it was the start of a revolution.

A shopper that happened to be conceal carrying saw the male shooter and attempted to stop him. Unfortunately, he failed to realize the male's wife was with him and was killed after she shot him.

Police arrived on scene and a fire fight ensued. It ended with the wife shooting her husband before turning her gun on herself.

Friends and neighbors of the couple have come forward saying that they heard them talking about fighting the government, but thought it was just talk.

Facebook posts show the husband making statements and looking to buy a rifle via straw purchase. Most likely due to being a convicted felon in his home State of Washington.

It is also being reported that these two were among the many "Patriots" that "defended" Bundy Ranch but were supposedly sent home after a few days for being "too radical." When I first heard that, I thought they were trying to distance themselves from the incident and the associations that go with it, but apparently the shooters had posted about being upset they were kicked out.

This all happened on the East side of town, not far from the front gates of Nellis Air Force Base.

Part of me is still kind of shocked from this. I've lived here in Vegas for the last 12 and a half years. I've driven by that WalMart multiple times when I was applying for the Electrician's Union, but never went in. I can almost picture in my head how it all happened.

The other part of me is confused by it.

Did these two think they'd martyr themselves and the rest of their ilk would rise up in their names? Were there supposed to be more people in different parts of town doing the same thing at the same time? More people in different cities?

White supremacy has become more and more disorganized in recent decades, although I feel as though things are beginning to congeal a little more, with radical tea party supporters, the Bundy Ranch stuff, and so on.

I think they thought that if radical anti-government people were so quick to converge on something like the Bundy Ranch it mean they would have the cajones and willpower to actually carry out an attempt at a bloody "revolution" like they did.

There are a lot of nuts out there who talk about stuff like this and never do it. It's either because they are embellishing their point to grab attention by anyone willing to listen, are just mentally sound enough to realize murdering innocent people to further a cause is counterproductive and heinous, or they are simply spineless and, while they might cheer on someone like these two nutjobs, they'd never actually carry it out themselves.

This is another case where many people talk about "fighting the government" by posting stupid anarchistic mantras on image macros in Facebook, posting on nutjob forums with fellow sympathizers, and having idols of Timothy McVeigh in their home, yet only a fraction of them actually mean what they say to the point of carrying out an attack.

The thing is, so many of these types of people are loners, anti-social, and inept at really anything but silently foaming at the mouth about whatever deviant ideas they have in their heads to the point they simply can't form a group because that means they have to actually go out and talk to people. Most of these guys are socially fucked up to the point that if they're lucky, they have a soulmate like a spouse or a best friend who can aid in the mission, but forming a posse is just not in their M.O.

It's an execution if it's legal. This most certainly was not an execution.

It wasn't an execution in the same sense as capital punishment, but very much in the sense that word is used for this style of killing.

I chose the word because the husband put his pistol against the back of officer Soldo's head and squeezed the trigger. He then placed it against the neck of Officer Beck and fired again.

Because offing a couple of cops and then going to walmart to brag about it is totally the way to start a revolution, y'all.

Thing is, I get what these crazies are saying. I do not trust the government, I do not believe that our large Federal government is sustainable. I think that if we do not go back to where more power is at the State level, then America will suffer a major economic collapse.

But going around shooting random people (who have nothing to do with policy at higher levels) is not going to help. All it is going to do is strengthen the divides and prevent us from reaching a compromise.

What a lot of these nutjobs are saying are far more than just what you said. The guys in this shooting also believed in "white power" and possessed anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi views. You hold your opinions on the government for rational reasons (even if one can debate them or can disagree). They hold their opinions because they believe "big government" equals "giving Jews and blacks more power" and "bringing the white man down."

It's really apples and oranges. These people hate the government not because it's getting too big, but because it's being run by a president whose skin color invokes rage in their hateful hearts.
