I doubt Lilly has heard every flake temp make that same brag. Most them quit or were fired for the obvious reason: they're flakes who don't know how to punch a timeclock yet. You have to do more to qualify for public assistance than lose a job, and the welfare rolls are actually way down compared to what they were in the 90's before we did welfare reform.
As GK pointed out, there's a five year limit on public assistance benefits. The clock stops when you go off, and starts when you go back on. After five years it doesn't matter how desperate you are, you can't get public assistance. Period.
That happened to one of my students a few years ago. She miscalculated how much time she had left on the clock and came up a semester short. She almost dropped out of nursing school (she was an A student), but I helped her find other resources that weren't public assistance and she managed to scrape through until she graduated and got a job. She's now a successful OB nurse.
