When I hear things like the OP, where there's a constant cycle of people walking out on their last day and then applying (successfully) for benefits, I find the statistics you just cited dubious.
The people who do these statistics know how to control for that. That's their job, and they do it well.

I doubt Lilly has heard every flake temp make that same brag. Most them quit or were fired for the obvious reason: they're flakes who don't know how to punch a timeclock yet. You have to do more to qualify for public assistance than lose a job, and the welfare rolls are actually way down compared to what they were in the 90's before we did welfare reform.

As GK pointed out, there's a five year limit on public assistance benefits. The clock stops when you go off, and starts when you go back on. After five years it doesn't matter how desperate you are, you can't get public assistance. Period.

That happened to one of my students a few years ago. She miscalculated how much time she had left on the clock and came up a semester short. She almost dropped out of nursing school (she was an A student), but I helped her find other resources that weren't public assistance and she managed to scrape through until she graduated and got a job. She's now a successful OB nurse.

A girlfriend of a coworker of mine has went through approximately 20some jobs since she did a maybe two week stint where we work. Anywhere from factory work to a call center to Target to gas stations. It's the people. Not trying to scam. They're just fucking worthless, unreliable, flakey, immature people.
Yup. And some of those people will go through that cycle their entire lives because they are fucking worthless, unreliable, flakey, immature people who will never grow up.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.
