It feels like the officer escalates this situation to a complete panic.
We really can't see what's going on inside the car. We do see the officer remove something that looks like a gun. That makes me understand why he was freaking out. Until the car is cleared, you have to assume there may be another weapon in the vehicle. The suspect forced his way out of the car; not a good thing.

I can see his right hand up, but not his left. It's really hard to see what he was doing IN the car.

I don't know if this shooting is justified or not. I think there's more to the story.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

I'm surprised they are managing to get away with that. I thought that the videos were covered under FOIA. That's how they are being considered here. The city police are looking into getting them and as a result, our department has been talking about them as well. City police considers it a FOIA thing and I believe plans on even hiring an additional person to handle all the FOIA requests that they expect to come in as a result of getting the cameras.

Outside of the guy's criminal record and such, as far as the reaching for something in the glove box when there is a gun (legal or not), I've always been taught by my officer coworkers that if you are armed and pulled over, you're better off saying there is a gun especially if you have to reach for something nearby and they are going to see it. That way the police officer doesn't see it first and get jumpy and think you are reaching for it.

Pure speculation, but I suspect the gun belonged to Ried and the driver wasn't aware it was in the box when he went to get his registration information, which was when Days spotted it. Otherwise, both of the guys in the car were blithering idiots.

Both hands are up. Short of doing the Single Ladies dance there would be no reason to have just one hand up in the surrender posture. But yes there's more to this. The officer and the suspect have a history with each other to begin with. The police are being mum on everything though included what the silver object removed from the vehicle was. ( Though its pretty easy to guess it was a gun. ).
