Yes this was an ACTUAL contest run by a the owner of an Iowa convenience store chain. Much ado about secret/mystery shops .

Funnily enough when I worked retail a similar setup was attempted.

One co worker had a habit of coming in late on a regular basis and was on his final notice. So this co worker and a few others set up a betting pool on when he would be sacked for it. Here's the catch: he put his cell number up to call him so you could effectively rig the contest in your favour but so would everyone else. The idea was that with everyone trying to make sure he would screw up on their day of choice but no one else (it was exact date only, no closest counts) everyone would be making sure he would come in on time and eventually it would be habitual.

Corporate found out and put the kibosh on it. They didn't like the idea of people betting on people's jobs.

I could totally see the guys at work doing this, but for an owner this sort of behaviour is appalling. I'm glad the lady was given her unemployment, that certainly constitutes hostile working conditions.
