  • Charleston shooting

A 21-year old white man with white supremacist leanings killed 9 people, including the Pastor, at a traditionally black church last night.

In the wake of the shooting, the usual talking heads have already suggested the killer was mentally ill and in need of help.

President Obama has already made a statement in which he mentioned the need for a serious discussion on guns.

This has, unsurprisingly, sent conservatives into a tizzy as they worry Obama and his socialist thugs (tm) will start coming for their guns any day now. They're also openly wondering why no one at the church was armed and able to stop the shooter.

Of course we'd be having a completely different discussion if the races of the shooter and victims were reversed.

Gee, why would no one in church have a gun?

Because that's against the law in South Carolina?

It was meant to be a joke, sorry I wasn't more clear.

No one in church would have a gun anyway.

Not knowing the culture as well done there, I have no idea if people would given the option.

Now I hear he was on prescription drugs and people are going nuts about this. Every shooting, I hear about how they are on prescription drugs for mental issues and people claiming these drugs are the reasons for these mass shootings.

No, they aren't. The mental illness is to blame. Stop skipping the obvious answer to try to further your dumb agenda (Legalizing weed in one case).

I know at least one person who does take a gun to church... but it's unlikely there would be one in a meeting of only about a dozen people, and even if there were, I expect several people would have died before the murderer... and at least as many as in fact did, if one of those happened to be the one with the gun.

The New Life Church shooting was stopped by an off duty security guard who had a concealed carry permit and her gun on her in church that day. While she didn't kill the gunman, once he met resistance, he took his own life.

                Link to Wikipedia info

And in another incident in Aurora, CO (before the theater shooting) involved a man returning to church after an altercation and opening fire. He was confronted and killed by an off-duty officer who had been inside the church when the first shots were fired.

                Article at the Denver Post

In both cases, the people involved were typically armed for their respective jobs, but I imagine that in states/cities that do not prohibit it, those who carry would likely not refrain just because they were attending church.

What blew my mind is the right wing talking heads claiming this is a hate crime against Christians, not black people.

I expect it would depend on the individual. I can easily imagine at least some people, who would normally carry a firearm, choosing to leave it at home or in the car before going into church, because they don't feel it's appropriate to bring a weapon into a house of worship.

Just what is it about Texas governors?

In fairness, it appears that he meant "incident," and simply misspoke. Which is good, because I cannot imagine how anybody could accidentally shoot nine people.

I'm actually kind of sick of these news stories being considered a big deal. It was a clear slip of the tongue. We all do that regularly. Shit happens. But because he's a politician on the other side of the aisle, liberals don't think think it could possibly just be that he meant to say incident and instead said accident. Conservatives do the same thing to the Democrats all the time. It's a beyond stupid thing to get up in arms over.

Its not even the politicians so much. The media needs something to fill the 24/7 "news" cycle of bullshit.

Ah, good, they found his 2000 word racist manifesto. That should shut the bobble heads the fuck up over whether this was a hate crime against black people or not. Well, at least it should. Probably won't. But we can hope.
