  • Gay Marriage Legal

How does this thread not exist yet?
    http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/26/politi...rriage-ruling/
Washington (CNN)In a landmark opinion, a divided Supreme Court on Friday ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide, establishing a new civil right and handing gay rights advocates a historic victory.
    WOOHOO.

What I'm not liking right now is my mother in law posting things like "GOD says what marriage is, not the Supreme Court!"

I've posted several rainbow themed pics today just for shits and giggles.

      I, for one, am disappointed.

Nobody I follow on Facebook is conservative or bigoted enough to be railing against this, nor is there fundie butthurt on any sites I follow. Not even FSTDT had anything on the decision.

I haven't gotten to read a single small-minded homophobic meltdown all day. I was expecting much more drama than this.

I'll show you the Catholic Church feed I'm on, dear.

But I, too, was surprised this wasn't up sooner. I just didn't have an opportunity to post myself.

        But.

        YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

I know some right-Christian type people. One of them was declaring his intention to kill himself, but then seemed to get over it fairly quickly. I suspect that he will be a microcosm of the community at large. In five years, everyone will be over this shit and onto something new.

Like scientists discovering how gay couples can have their own children without the other sex, and people saying how wrong that is.

Hey, I can dream. It would be a fascinating thing.

If you really want some fun, just check out how many Twidiots are threatening to move to Canada over the decision...

My stepmom went on a Facebook rampage earlier, saying things like "I do NOT hate anyone!" and "We shouldn't base laws off of feelings!" What really got me though, were the people saying that it's only marriage when God declares it so. Does that mean that because I had a courthouse wedding instead of a fancy church one we couldn't afford, I'm not actually married?

I really got a laugh out of the people complaining that "This is a Christian country! How did this happen?"

Even my most conservative friends agree this was the right decision. Haven't found anyone on my friend's list who has publicly disagreed but I'd happily rip them a new one if they did. If your religion doesn't preach tolerance or acceptance, then go fuck your religion.

And the gay guys who get married in church are... Not... Married...?

I mean one of the lawsuits in courts were on that basis, that a church was suing because their religious liberty to perform gay marriages was threatened.

Prior to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell vs. Hodges, same-sex marriage was legal in 37 states, and the District of Columbia :

From what I've read, it appears that these 37 states and the District of Columbia will be largely unaffected by today's ruling. They'll just continue as they have been.

But what about the remaining 13 states, where same-sex marriage had not been legal until today? Will they comply with the Supreme Court decree?

(Not that they have a choice.)

Well, it appears that the majority of the 13 state governors are ready to comply with the Supreme Court's decision.

New York Daily News - "Louisiana, Texas governors vow to fight Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage while others pledge to comply"

Slate - "The Governors Ready to Accept the Same-Sex Marriage Ruling—and Those Who Aren't"

The governors of 10 states (Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee) have made statements ranging from hailing the Supreme Court ruling as a major victory for equality (Gov. Jay Nixon of Missouri), to quiet acceptance (most of the governors), to clear disagreement (Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia, Gov. John Kasich of Ohio). But all 10 of them have openly stated that they will abide by the Supreme Court decision.

However, three governors have met the ruling with some degree of defiance - Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, and Gov. Phil Bryant of Mississippi.

(Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi - Gee, what a surprise. )

I would not expect to see a showdown like the one in Little Rock in 1957 ... but these three governors, unlike the other ten, have not stated any willingness to abide by the Supreme Court ruling. They have condemned the decision, and Jindal and Abbott in particular have vowed to defend the "religious liberties" of those who oppose same-sex marriage.

That makes me a little nervous. I don't know how far these three are willing to go on this issue ... Hopefully, not too far. We will see.

I just want to make note of something :

Although the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell vs. Hodges is not going to actually change anything in those 37 states, it was still a very important ruling for many of them.

This article has a good graphic that shows that in 21 out of those 37 states, same-sex marriage was legal only because a federal court had ruled that the state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

If the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled today that a state ban on same-sex marriage was permitted by the Constitution, then it would have effectively reversed all of the previous lower court rulings overturning the state bans on same-sex marriage.

In other words, the Supreme Court's ruling today means that nothing changes in those 21 states. But if the Supreme Court had ruled the other way, then any or all of those 21 states could have sought to reinstate their bans on same-sex marriage. So the ruling was still very significant for those 21 states.

All the avatars on facebook going to rainbows is giving me a headache, honestly.

Like, literally giving me a headache, in that I'm trying to look past the filter and everything's obscured, makes me have to focus too much to try to figure out what the picture is. Hence, headache.
