A story I've heard is that at the end of one of the World Wars, the U.S. military was cutting back on purchases of surgical dressings (fewer casualties). Someone mentioned to Kimberly Clark, one of their suppliers, that the large dressings were a high-pilferage item, with nurses taking them for use as menstrual pads (disposable, more convenient than the old-style reusable ones), and that they might want to look into this as a possible market for their product.

Count me as one who really doesn't see the big deal here. It's toys and bedding that's getting the gender designations removed. Not the entire store. Big to-do over nothing. I teach toddlers at church and the class is comprised of mostly boys. The dolls get played with just as often as the cars. It's actually really cute. Mostly it's the boys who have younger siblings and they bring me the baby so I can wrap it in a blanket to go to bed. Then they go shove it in the toy oven.
I was ignoring labels before it was cool, lol. I played with my dad's and uncles' old Hot Wheels way more than I played with Barbies. I still want Star Wars bedsheets, but alas they don't often come in Queen size. I don't care if my son wants pony sheets (though I may encourage him to get blue or purple instead of pink just to avoid the argument with my husband). Just let the kids play with the toys they want to play with. Play is essential for their development. It's how they learn. Sure males and females are different, and that's a wonderful thing. Life would be boring if we were all the same. But not so different at age 2 that girls playing with trucks and boys playing with dolls is going to somehow cause them harm.
The one thing I could see being more difficult--and admittedly it's a bit of a stretch--is something like the Angel Tree around the holidays. Generally all you get is the age and gender of the child. Sometimes a brief wishlist, but not always. In that case it is easier to go to the (gender segregated) toy aisle and say 3 year old girls usually like dolls so I'll get this girl I have no other knowledge about a doll. And I've yet to meet a little boy around that age that didn't love a big truck or something to do with dinosaurs.
