The context kinda makes it worse though ;p

Did you even read the link you posted. In it, the principal first states that he believes the kid did it for attention. THEN he says he got what he asked for: attention.

That's not defending, that's clarifying a statement which makes it seem he was saying something he clearly wasn't.

Did you even read the link I posted? Because the principal isn't even in it. Its the police union president speaking. Also, what precisely did it seem like? The context of the statement doesn't lessen the assholishness of it. In fact its even worse in context.

Accusing the kid of wanting attention is absurd given that it was the principal and cops that decided to turn this into a three ring circus. Not the kid. The principal did not think it was a bomb. The cops did not think it was a bomb. Yet the principal still called the cops and the cops still sent 6 officers over to arrest 14 year old kid.

Especially now that the school is starting to slander him and its coming out that he's brought all sorts of weird shit inventions to school before without a problem. Plus there's a history of the kid being bullied and discriminated against by the district.

I can't envision a 14 year old Muslim immigrant in *Texas* wanting to draw the attention of authorities for lawlz.

          Interesting finale:

          https://boingboing.net/2015/10/21/ah...mily-will.html

He was feted by institutions like MIT, but ultimately, the best offer came from the authoritarian monarchy in Qatar, whose Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development offered the boy a full scholarship for his secondary and undergrad education.

It's a huge PR coup for the Qataris, who, like many authoritarian states, struggle with brain-drain to the west. The Irvine police's high-profile demonstration that the USA is a country whose freedoms are reserved to people without Muslim names made a good case for viewing the US as democratic in name only, and not so different from any of the middle east's dictatorships.

Mohamed comes from a poltiically shrewd family; his father is a perennial pro-human-rights presidential candidate in his native Sudan. This is certainly not lost on them, but neither is the reality that their son came within inches of a long-term prison sentence or even a police execution for which no one would ever be held accountable.

In a way its sort of impressive that Islamaphobic dipshittery chased a child completely out of the country. And the best option was Qatar.

Not really. Based on my understanding, he basically took the clock out of one "case" and put it into another.

Most of us could have probably done that at 14.

And now Ahmed's family is asking for $15 million from the city and school where the incident happened, and is threatening a lawsuit.

This is drying up my sympathies for them. What happened to the kid was harsh and inexcusable, but this is a ridiculous money-grab. I'm starting to wonder how much grandstanding his father is using him for...

I was going to post about that. The father sounds like a real ass.

Them trying to bleed the town dry of cash doesn't help their case. Lends credibility to those who have been arguing this whole time that this was done on purpose for attention.

There's his interview he gave. In it he states that he didn't want to make it look suspicious. If he didn't want to make it suspicious, why the hell did he put it in a briefcase look-a-like case? That suspicious as hell. And furthermore, if he was just trying to build a clock, why was he so concerned about it looking suspicious in the first place? If he was so concerned about it being mistaken for a bomb, why did he make it look like a suitcase bomb (albeit an amateur one at that)?

His dad has been trying to exploit this since the beginning for his political gain and he's gained plenty.

That sure is a lot of coincidences.
