Student Vilified For Protesting Consent Courses

A month ago, a University of Warwick student gained attention when he made a blog protesting a mandatory consent class he was required to attend. To say it didn't go over well would be an understatement He's now being treated as if he is a rapist. At one point, he was threatened physically and chased out of a bar.

As far as I can tell he wasn't accused of any crime, nor did he try to justify rape, he just didn't agree with mandatory courses (which is a perfectly valid point). This mob justice crap is insane.

Except it wasn't just disagreeing with mandatory classes. Instead of just stating disagreement, he showed exactly what is wrong with so many guys these days. "I don't LOOK like a rapist." You look exactly like a rapist. Rapists are human beings. That's the only common physical characteristic. And quite frankly, guys (and women) who eventually will go on to force themselves on someone else probably say the exact same thing. By trying to get rid of it being mandatory, some of those people are not getting the reminders they need of the nuances of consent and in turn contributes to higher rates of sexual assault.

So no, he doesn't deserve to be threatened. But yes, he is part of the sexual assault problem.

He doesn't deserve the harassment, but he doesn't grasp the problem either. An alarming number of college students really don't know the boundaries of consent and rare is the college rapist that actually thinks what he did was rape.

Also where does it say it was mandatory? He got an invite over Facebook and was personally offended by it. I don't see anything that says it was mandatory. He could have just declined. But he took it personally and tried to be a special snowflake.

hmm, I remember reading it was mandatory. Well if it wasn't, he should have just ignored it and went on with his day.

Bullshit. The only ones to blame are the ones who sexually assault others. I'm really tired of this collective blaming. As if he's responsible for the thoughts and actions of others just because he publically voiced his opinion.

By publicly making a spectacle of this, he's encouraging other people not to go whether that is his intent or not. Others may go, "Hey, I don't look like a rapist either, why should I go?" And they could very well be the people who think having sex with someone who is drunk is okay or that if they don't say no, they are consenting when that's not the case.
