  • Console Wars

I browsing on Facebook yesterday. One of the people I follow, a gaming journalist posted about some game. The first comment was, "Does this mean you're finally admitting the XBox One is better?"

WHO THE FUCK CARES? I see being involved in a console war to be childish. The last time I got in a heated argument was when I was in 7th grade and I was fighting vehemently defending Team SNES and arguing against a kid arguing for Team Genesis.

Why was this the last time I argued about a console? I grew up. I recognized that great games can be played on all platforms. Now don't get me wrong. It's ok to figure out which system you prefer and will offer you the most games worthy of your time. And that will be the better console. For you. Not for everyone else though.

The guy's profile picture who posted the comment made him look to be mid 20's maybe early 30's. Certainly old enough to know better.

I don't know if it was ever used in advertising, but I recently saw a graphic that said:

            Super Nintendo is what Genesisn't

That's my personal preference. I stopped buying consoles after the SNES. I got tired of buying a console, only to have the company come out with a new one, and subsequently not being able to get new games for the one I already had.

At least with a PC, you can upgrade it, and most of the time you can still play your old games on it.

Of course you never saw the TurboGrafx-16 sink so low, right?

I grew up with just PC's, and didn't get a console until I figured the PS3 made a good blu-ray player with the bonus of making my "dumb" TV into a smart TV thanks to apps like Netflix, and while I had it, I might as well get games for it. The PS3 had since died, and I got a PS4, but was disappointed in the fact that now all the games I bought for the PS3 are now useless.

"Console Wars" haven't been relevant in anything save a financial sense in years. Cross platform development has rendered it mostly moot. There are few exclusives anymore. So you're mainly choosing a console based on its non-game features, services and community these days. The one exception being possibly Nintendo but they have sort of wandered off into their own quirky realm.

The only domain that still features exclusives like the halcyon days of consoles is the handheld market. And thats not so much a war as it is Nintendo printing money.

I hear so much about this because of my roommate working with video games. I don't know that I've ever managed to care. Someone offered to sell me a system back before I had one, I said yes. That's why I now own that platform. I don't see it as a huge deal. I've seen a lot of similar arguments about phones and computer systems though too and I don't get it on those either. It's a personal thing. I have reasons why I like Mac OS and why I like Windows. The phones, it's really a personal preference. I don't get why it has to be a competition.

I'm a Playstation gal because one) the games I play are exclusive for the PS and two) I prefer the contoller. That's the only consideration I need for choosing a console.

Yeah, I prefer the PS controller over the X-Box. I also prefer Sony's online services as well as a seemingly less aggravating online community. PS tends to have the sort of exclusives I am inclined towards as well.

Anything sufficiently Big and Exciting(tm) will come to both anyhow as well as PC. Its more the niche titles and genres you end up deciding on. Sony has a better record with Japanese titles for instance.

Except Kingdom Hearts. That’s still Playstation only. Squeenix is being slow at spreading the love.

Squeenix has basically released a Kingdom Hearts of some form on every possible platform except X-Box. Not sure if its been out of spite or disinterest. The only reason Squeenix is even beginning to dev for X-Box cross platform releases now is because they finally got around to developing a cross platform engine.

Though I think they partly tossed that engine in factor of the Unreal engine now. Which would make a PC port much easier down the road. Squeenix has never had much interest in the PC market aside from mmos though really. And even those are just somewhat dubious console ports.

Japanese companies are very slow to change due to their business culture.
