Maybe I need a vacation. But I just absolutely, 100% want to do damage every time someone uses the word "entitled."

"I'm entitled to a free phone"

    "I'm entitled to an upgrade"

"I'm entitled to a free [insert random accessory or product]"

    No.

    Just NO.

    Eligible for a free phone?
    Eligible for an upgrade?
Have a coupon for a free [random product or accessory]?

    Maybe.

    But entitled? NO.

    GAH. I hate that word!

Aside from defense and interest the biggest chuck of spending in the US federal budget is labeled "entitlements". Wonder where that's written in the Constitution???

I don't have any problems with entitlement... if it is truly something the person is entitled to.
For example, a person accused of a crime is entitled to a fair trial presided over by an impartial judge, is entitled to face their accuser in open court, and is entitled to be judged by a jury of their peers.
      or
Every citizen, barring the commission of a felony severe enough to remove the right, is entitled to cast ballots in elections.

I do however HATE the abuse of that word that so many people commit... I'm sorry, if it isn't written into the constitution or something that is morally obligitory (which 99% of 'entitlement' requests are not), then you aint entitled to shit

Thank you Smiley. This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about!

It drives me nuts how people use this word. I can't 100% blame customers, either. The word is used in coupons, advertisements...everywhere!

        It drives me crazy!

          I'm with the others.

Entitlement when you actually need it? For example, I'm entitled to free pregnancy support because I am pregnant. That's fine by me.

Entitlement when you don't? How about no.

In the U.S. no one is entitled to anything but emergency medical care. Everyone may deserve sensible care, but we aren't entitled to it legally.

See, but even this can be brought into question. Why are you entitled to free pregnancy support? You chose to get (or stay) pregnant. If I choose to buy a Porsche, am I entitled to free oil changes, snow tires, and assistance with my car payments, or should I be responsible for that choice myself? I think that "entitled" and "deserve" and other similar concepts have been so overused and overdemanded that they have no real positive value anymore.

pile of monkeys, it was an example. Probably not the best example, but just an idea.

"Entitlement" usually applies to rights granted by law. So, as a Canadian citizen, I am entitled to yearly PAP smears. Lucky me. It doesn't mean I'm more deserving of them than any other woman on the planet. It just means that Canadian law grants me that right.

I'm also "entitled" to free oil changes for the first year that I own my new car, because the dealership is contractually obligated to provide them, according to the paperwork we signed. Again, "entitlement" in this sense doesn't mean any God-given right. It just means there's been a legal agreement made that promised oil changes.
