What specifically is valid between people may be different, due to changes in logic and information possessed, but the word valid itself is unchanging in meaning.

Actually yes you can, but you have to clarify if you're talking empirically or not.

Besides, why would you want to hold an opinion where you actively know you're wrong?

Who says you're wrong? It's a different opinion to yours, that doesn't automatically make it wrong.

Definition clarification: people who play devil's advocate don't actually hold the position they're defending. That precludes them from being correct.

I call bull on that, to take the 2+2=5 arguement if you truly believe that but argue that 2+2=4 then although you don't hold that position it is correct, it doesn't preclude you from being correct, just not in line with what you believe.

I admit to using devil's advocate sometimes, for the exact reason that Broomjockey stated. Sometimes too, not necessarily on here but on other forums too, you get a so called debate thread ending up as a circle jerk of "I agree!" and "Me too!". At which point, it's a good idea to throw in an opposing idea to get people to think about their opinion and to actually post accordingly, rather than just bleating "I agree!" like a load of sheep. XD

Conversely, I have also seen trolling by people who are just trying to cause trouble; however, those posts tend to be more in the region of "(insert moderator/admin name here) is a cunt and this forums sucks!". Even if it is pertinent to the subject, for example a debate on abortion and a troll puts in "Abortion is evil and you are all murderers!" along with some faux shots of aborted fetuses, it's quite obviously trolling and not simply someone throwing in a devil's advocate opinion.
